Blue/grey smoke

Just washed the car this morning and then took it for a short couple of miles run to dry the brakes.
After about a mile there was suddenly a cloud of blue/grey smoke behind me and a considerable loss of power. I limped home and put the car in the garage and smoke was still pouring out of the exhausts, and there is an oily deposit inside the exhaust pipes.
I am fearing the worst, but before I ring my Indy in the morning, can anyone give me suggestions of what it might be, and how much I might have to remortgage the house for ?

Chris

It sounds to me like the Air-Oil Separator has split inside. A good check is to remove the inlet hose to the throttle body, open the butterfly, and peek inside with a torch. If the surfaces inside are coated with a wet, oily substance, then the AOS is the likely culprit.

Edit: As for cost, the part is £75 inc VAT, but it is a bit of a pig to change, and takes a couple of hours if you know what you are doing. Easier on a manual than a Tiptronic.

Yeah the aos. Richard is always right but this happened to my boxster. As far as remortgaging the house you won't need to do that. My indi at the time charged £220but took him the time to diagnose it. So worry not. Hope your still smiling.

Thanks guys - I am feeling a bit better.
The car is a manual and has only done 22,000 miles from new - it had a full 24,000 service in March.

All sorted now thanks guys - my Indy replaced 'faulty breather bottle' - is this the same thing as the aos ?
Apparently it had not just failed - according to the Indy it had 'exploded' - consequently it cost me 4 hours labour to clean up manifolds and fit the new part (£65 plus vat) - but I'm not complaining - much better than an engine rebuild !

That's great stuff really chuffed for ya. Its a much better feeling than feeling like you did, that much I know. Good stuff again.........

Yes, that's the AOS, which is bottle-shaped (ish). I think 4 hours is a fair time too, if they had a lot of cleaning up to do. Sigh of relief, eh?

Glad it wasn't too expensive Chris, I know when mine went I feared the worst, the cloud of smoke is like something out of James Bond. seems its quite a common issue on the 996
