Bluetooth Car Kit - effecting the car?

Hi,

I have had a Parrot Bluetooth kit installed into my 996 with PCM1 unit.

Lovely unit and was easily installed behind the PCM unit and mutes the radio when making/receiving a call etc. All well and good.

However, I have noticed that when I am on the phone the sat nav stops working. Basically, if the Parrot is in use the PCM works OK but unfortunately the map doesnt move. When I hang up it updates the map and starts working OK.

Also, I have the central locking set to switch iteself on after you move away. I was on the phone before pulling away and only noticed after driving away that this function didnt work. As soon as I disconnected, the doors auto locked!

Both of these are not major issues, however, I am concerned that there may be other things (airbag etc.) not working.

Any ideas?

They didn't make a connection to the speed signal wire, did they? It sounds like it is a speed signal related problem, as both the PCM and auto-lock use that signal.

You beet me to it Richard.... The Parrot kit goes between the ISO connectors on the back of a head unit... I bet one of the relays is cutting the speed or CAN lines.

Shouldn't effect anything major though....... [:)]

There is a speed signal wire (grey/pink) in the ISO connector. I expect they have connected it to something they shouldn't.

Hi Richard/Paul,

Thanks for your replies.

I believe it was a straight forward male/female connector that goes between the unit and original iso connector. Gets the power from there and interrupts the sound/uses the existing speakers. I dont believe he cut into any wires!

Surely that wouldnt effect the Central Locking system, maybe the Sat Nav though. I did read or hear some time ago that some in car aftermarket electronics were effecting the cars electronics, think I heard that a car kit set off an airbag!

The auto locking is programmed in the alarm module to lock the doors when the speed reaches 3-5mph. The speed signal wire is common to PCM and the alarm module (amongst other things). If the Parrot kit is disconnecting or grounding the speed signal wire at the radio connector, it will be disabling the speed-related devices. I expect that the piggy back connector is doing that.

Hi Richard,

That makes perfect sense.

Would you say then, that I have a fault with the unit/connector or its an inherent fault or flaw in the system?

Thanks,

Rob

I expect that Porsche use a terminal on the connector which is normally connected to something else on other cars. On your car, the connections on the black "ISO" plug are:

Pin 1 - Grey/Pink - Speed signal
Pin 3 - Yellow/Black - Telephone Mute
Pin 4 - Red/Black - Permanent Live
Pin 5 - White - Antenna Amplifier
Pin 6 - Green/Blue - Switch Backlighting
Pin 7 - Orange - Switched Live
Pin 8 - Brown - Earth

If you have a wiring diagram for the Parrot, you might be able to see what's wrong. If they connect something else to Pin 1, that's your problem.
