Is it possible to add a bluetooth connection to a factory PCM head unit or do you need to replace it? I was looking for a simple cost effective solution if at all achieveable!

Yes, it is possible, and reasonably straightforward, but I'll leave it to you to decide if is cost effective. There are several aftermarket units which you can add to the fibre optic (MOST) loop to give you a Bluetooth connection. Google "NAV-TV Tooki", "ViseeO Mosto", "Dension Gateway" and "Mobridge". I had a ViseeO in my Cayman, which replaced the phone module to give a Bluetooth phone connection. The phone integration was perfect - it used the PCM interface, synchronised the phonebook, etc. You are supposed to be able to stream music with it, but I had a separate interface for my iPod, so didn't bother. The Tooki works in a similar way. The Dension and Mobridge units integrate the phone via Bluetooth, and have a direct iPod connection. The operating interface for the iPod uses the PCM CDC controls, and is a bit 'clunky'.

Thanks for the feedback. They are all quite expensive options and it would work out cheaper to replace the headunit with a new bluetooth enabled one? Are there any options from Parrot that are suitable?

Hi, my C2 already had a parrot system fitted when I bought it, its quite an intrusive system into the cars electrics. I opted for a Bluetooth Alpine head unit, which works a treat and enabled me to get rid of a complete rats nest of wiring, the Alpine unit handles Bluetooth audio and Mobile phone perfectly. Just be aware of the alarm sensor on the stereo head unit if you replace it, otherwise the car will bleep overtime you close it.

The issue with a 2004 car is that it has the MOST fibre optic bus, which transmits control and sound signals between the head unit, phone module, amplifier, and CD changer. You can change the head unit, but you will also need an interface to connect the new head unit audio outputs to the fibre optic input on the amplifier. Alternatively, you can change the amplifier as well, but the Bose speakers are an unusual impedance, so you really need to change those too.

The cheapest way is the FM transmitter route, followed by the seperate Bluetooth speaker type unit then it's really the parrot route followed by hear unit wit blie tooth. . Suggest you read up on a few online reviews about the merits of the cheaper units.
