body decal removal

Does anyone know how easy it is to get the decals off ? I'm thinking of the 'PORSCHE' and '924S' ones at the rear and I also have the long 'S' down the doors.

I don't want to get them half off and find I just end up with a mess which I can't tidy up. Do they come off easily, and am I likely to find much fade on white paintwork from where they previously were previously stuck on?

cheers ........... Phil

Think I remember that the geezer on 'Wheeler Dealers' used a hot air gun/hairdryer to remove the door decal on a 924.

For badges I used dental floss to take the plastic off and a hairdryer to remove sticky stuff. Could see shape of badge on paintwork but hd and wax removed.

Regards

Rob

when i first got my Porsche i had to replace the rear logo, its not a hard job, but you need alot of time as it can get messy getting all the decals off. A hair dryer can indeed be a good tool to help, but i found thinners and a rag the best solution.

I remove stickers a lot. The best way is to use a heat gun, but be careful. If you leave the car parked in bright sunlight as long as posible before starting, they might come off by hand. To remove the glue I use petrol - thinners a disaster if car sprayed in cellouse - ok if 2K. You can also buy stickey stuff remover.

You will always see where the stickers were. To get rid of this requires elbow grease. With 2000 wet & dry flattern the panels to swage line and buff 3 times with quality compound and a professional machine, not one of those things out of a Sunday magazine. If you have never used one before - practice first. Give it a polish and car will look better than new.

Hope this helps.

Hey, thanks chaps, the hairdryer did the trick nicely. I haven't done them all yet but it's looking much better.

All done, looks much better. Thanks for the advice. Haven't done the rear 924S yet, because that'll come off anyway if the insurance co. replaces the rear panel.... [] - waiting for feedback on that. had the assessor round on Friday.

I have alternative plans for a 924S badge at the rear, will post when it all comes together.

I have alternative plans for a 924S badge at the rear,

When I pick up my new (for me anyway) 924 daily driver, I'm thinking of having 925 put on.
Daily driver = 9 to 5!
Get it?

On the other hand, maybe that's not such a good idea. Forget it!

Anyway, can't wait to pick it up sometime in next few days. It's basically an 84 with 944 brakes and suspension already fitted.

924S now removed from rear panel.

Had to resort to Tiptonics tip (? tip-squared ?) on flatting with fine wet-&-dry as it left a mark, but as I'm having some paint done soon I was prepared to risk making a mess. All came up nicely though [:)][:)] Just the Porsche script across rear to go.

It's looking good. I was going to replace the 924S with an italic script (similar to 968 and current cars) but I quite like the uncluttered de-badged look. I'll think about that a bit longer.

Somewhere we discussed removing the plastic trim strips along the side of the car (I think it was Marc but can't find the thread). Am I correct in saying they are held on with double-sided tape?

cheers ....... Phil
