Bodyshop in South Wales??

Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a bodyshop in or near South Wales that knows what it is doing in removing and re-fitting the front screen from my 3.2? I've got water coming in both bottom corners. I guess the rubber wasn't sealed properly when the screen was changed some years ago. Really keen to ensure that no damage is done to seal or paint during removal and re-fitting - also want to check that there is no corrosion starting under the rubber.
Any advice appreciated!

Regards,

Peter

Peter,

Our part of the world sems not overly blessed with Porsche bodywork specialists.
I have just had a bare metal refinishing job completed on my car. The front and rear screens came out and the bodyshop used RAC Windscreens to remove and refit the screeens. They were painstaking and did an excellent job. I used new seals all round in the rebuild and found the cheaper "pattern" seals to be poor when compared with the Porsche supplied stuff. In fact the pattern supplier concerned had three tries at getting a suitable seal for the rear screen and when the third attempt was found to be as useless as the earler attempts I bought from Porsche who got it right first time.

Hi Mike,

Thanks for the info, incidentally which bodyshop did you use and were you 100% pleased. I need to consider getting front and rear bumpers done as the usual alloy corrosion is starting to rear it's head. As the rest of the car has never had paint it needs to be a perfect match with the original. So many bodyshops in my experience lack basic care and attention to detail so I want one that will treat my car with the same reverence that I do!

Peter,

Pleased? As far as the presentation of the completed car is concerned, no, not really, but others who have looked at the car say that I am being far too picky. However it remains short of the standard I had hoped for but is a huge improvement over what it was.

It is the lack of attention to detail that really irks. Front wing alignment is just a bit out, bellows attachment not quite right and things like that. Really in total not a great deal of work to rectify which makes it all the more annoying that it wasn't done properly in the first place.

The remedy, which I am really quite happy to do, is to remove the items that came off and refit them. This will give me the opportunity to reassembly using the appropriate Dinitrol anti corrossion products.

The big upside is that the work was sensibly priced, the preparation and painting was well done and I have the basics of a very smart looking car. I got to know that car very well - I was afforded access to it during the refinishing so that I could chase down corrossion. I found plenty of loose underseal and two small areas that were perforated (under headlight and lower corner of engine lid). Plenty of potential rust problems as well and all of these I properly addressed.

So, when my work allows, I will complete the car to the standard that I would like. I will also valet the inside, change the Sony for the Toronto plus modern amp and Blaupunkt swan neck equaliser that I have ready. New tyres to replace SO3's and perhaps an H & S silencer.

Generally, I think that I got what I paid for and possibly more. I simply refused to pay the nonsense money asked for by some refinishers (£5k-£8k to paint a 911?) Perhaps the car would have been absolutely perfect had I paid that sort of money, but maybe not. Suffice to say that the work that I feel needs to be done to bring my Supersport to the standard that I would be very happy with and the car deserves is relatively small and £2k-£5k a relatively large saving.

So, yes Peter, I am pleased on balance. Lastly, the work took 6 months to complete, which was of no concern to me at all. Selecting someone to whom a valuable and valued car an be entrusted for refinishing work is no simple matter, particularly if most or all of the orginal paintwork is intact. Good luck.

If you would like to see the car, or talk about the dirty side of Porsche 911 ownership, things like rust, oxidation, underbody protection etc, contact me.
