bolts under sill rusting

1989 3.2, white, 82,000 miles, v. good nick. Under the sill there are 3/4 bolts that secure the body to the shell, i think, on the drivers side they also secure the oil pipes to the front oil cooler. They are rusting and on a white car this looks dissappointing, 1. i want to relace them, can i take them out 1 at a time without the body dropping off. 2. What are they can i replace them with any bolt of that size and thread ie stainless or do i purchase them from opc ?
 
Sounds like a good opportunity to take the sill covers off completely - you may be surprised at what you find!

The sill covers are held on by the 3 screws you can see and a number of self tappers on the top edge of the cover, hidden under the rubber sill trim. Having taken mine off a few weeks ago and discovered rust I would urge you to do the same. My car is an 88 with 55k miles.

Even if yours is clear of the tin worm it's a great opportunity to give everything a clean up, treat with Dinitrol and replace the rusted screws. If you just want to replace the screws then the part numbers are 900.187.129.02 and 900.151.007.02 for the bolt and washer. Passenger side screw is a bit shorter, part number 900.187.032.02. If you want to stainless steel equivalents the sizes are B6.3x38 and B6.3x32 - try www.a2a4.co.uk, though I'm yet to buy anything from them.

it doesn't run a seperate floor pan like a Beetle

but you knew that and you are joking, right?

As Chris says its a good opportunity to remove the sill covers, don't panic if you see rust (hopefully not) but you'd be surprised how a 911 of this vintage can and will rust, particularly in these areas.

Where is the top edge of the cover, the rubber sill trim ? The rubber cover that is visible when the doors are open ? i don't want to be undoing the wrong thing.
 
Remove the two end caps, held on by two self tappers - one into the end of the sill, the other underneath.

The black rubber strip which runs the whole length of the sill needs to come off next. I suggest you work this out with your fingers - get one edge free and then the other will come away no trouble.

The upper fixings for the sill cover are hidden by this rubber sill trim.
 
I have found that refitting the black rubber trim is made a whole lot easier if you liberally douse the area with GT85 / WD40 or similar.
OK, it may need cleaning up afterwards, but re-threading dry rubber trim into the sill cover can be almost impossible otherwise.
