Hopefully you folks will know the answer. [] A replacement bonnet badge came today. However the 'Porsche' text in the badge was gold in colour. The text on the badge which is currenly on the car is black. When i queried this with the supplier they told me that upto 93 the bonnet badge text was gold after this year the text is black. Coincidentally, the badge has to be returned as it is faulty anyway!

Paul,
I'm not sure where to find the answer to this one. Interestingly, PET show 2 part numbers - 901.559.210.20 (I presume the original) and 993.559.211.00 (which I assume to be the later version). However, PET doesn't mention anything about year of fitment - or what colour is used - so I don't know which is which.
Certainly the "P O R S C H E" on my original is gold and, like yours, the new one is also gold. We need some owners with original badges to respond in order to get a clue.
Just looking on the Design 911 site (www.design911.co.uk) they show both - the 901 version with gold text and the 993 version with black text - so I guess that might be the answer. However, as to the date of change, I'm still confused. Since both parts are listed for the 964 in PET there must have been a change at some point. The 993 listing only shows the 993 part.
It wouldn't surprise me if the change occurred at the 911 Anniversary (in 1993) although I've got no evidence to base that guess on.
Regards
Dave

Gold on my 964 and black on my boxster. Both are original AFAIK. Personally I think the black looks better and would be very tempted to use that if I replaced the one on the 964
That was a fast reply Dave ... Thanks. My initial order was infact from Design911. This badge had gold text, unfortunately it was mis-shaped, naturally it was returned. I then ordered from Porscheshop, it was only when this badge also arrive mis-shaped that i had a closer look at the one on the car. It was then that i noticed the difference in text colour. When i checked this out with my local OPC they would appear to only have the later one listed and of course twice the price!

Paul,
Did it turn out that the "mis-shapen" was intentional - or just accidental. I beleive that there are some designs that are intentionally curved and some which are absolutely flat.
I just went out to the car an got the old badge and it has the "901" part number cast into the back - and it's got gold lettering - and it's "almost" flat. I'm sure I remember something about the newer "993" badges - which I guess are the ones with black lettering - being slightly curved. Certainly it's the later badges which are used on the 993, 996 and Boxsters as well as the later 964s.
Wayne - you seem to be at odds with all the other information.
The thing that is so difficult to establish when it comes to "original" is that you can never know if a previous owner has changed the badge - they do get nicked with some regularity - or, even, had a go with a bit of black paint. The lettering does stand out a little better when it's black. Maybe that's what Porsche thought when they changed it!!!

Hi Dave,
No it was poor QC, it was noticably out of shape. Even with the seal in place it wouldn't sit true with the bonnet. Not like the one that is on at the moment. I think it is most probably a bad batch.!
A point also, to confirm what you say "they do get nicked with some regularity!", is that in my records file the badge had been purchased a number of times when it was periodically in for maintenance or service, and as you quite rightly pointed out it is with part number 993. The mystery continues.
