Book Recommendation

So my son (soon to be PCGB member) just bought himself a '79 911SC from Jim Avis in Sussex - who's a great guy incidentally.

Pre-purchase, the car's engine was brought back to health by Jez Parsons of GCS (he of the Porsche Engined VW Camper van that's mentioned in this month's Porsche Post) so it's in pretty good mechanical and overall condition.

It's his first Porsche and my son does want to start earning himself some spanners. He was wondering what the best publication is for learning the workings of the mighty 911. I have the Hayes Workshop manual, but find it pretty limited on the explanation side of things. Keep in mind my son is a mechanical novice so needs to learn from the ground up. He wants to perform some mild self-servicing and renewal work.

Any ideas? I don't want to just tell him to hit Amazon or Pelican parts without a decent recommendation.

Thanks,

In my view the Bentley Service Manual for the SC should prove the best investment of £85 any budding spanner man can make. Almost as good (and in some parts even better) than the factory workshop manuals. Readily available from the likes of Gmund books etc.

Hi Tom, congrats on the new arrival - get the Bentley book definitely and Wayne Dempsey's 101 Projects book is also very good for novices and experts alike. I bought the Bentley book from the States (eBay) for about £55, if you buy 101 Projects direct from Pelican then Wayne will autograph it for you if you ask nicely, nice present for the new 911 owner. Cheers, JG

Congrat's on a wise purchase. I've met Jim and he seems a straight up bloke so the car is probably sound. Second all of the above especially the Bentley (buy from Amazon - used buys are cheap) but if you want some detailed reading that gives you a perspective on how the 911SC came into being buy Paul Freres book 'Porsche 911 Story' 7th edition.

HI tom I to am a new owner Of a 3.2 carrera

I have just orded the bentley service manual from amazon in the states for $88 with postage its cheaper than the uk price.
Wayne dempsey's book is very good to.

enjoy

Hi Tom,Plenty of advice on books, but is it wise to start one`s DIYing of cars on a 911?I would imagine everyone on here who gets their hands dirty, cut their teeth on far simpler vehicles.I would counsel caution as a
little knowledge is a dangerous thing especially when fiddling with a motor vehicle,especially a quick `un.
If you need all the fundamentals in one book try;
"The Motor Vehicle"by Newton,Garret & Steeds it used to be the standard work for ONC/HNC mechanical engineering its not a Porsche exclusive publication it relates to the technology in all vehicles, and its not light entertainment but neither is taking cars apart.
best of luck
jr.
