Boost gauge reading

Hello All

I know this is a subject you have gone over many times before, regarding weak wastegates etc.

But as I have only just got the car, where should the boost gauge be reaching. Mine is going all the way round the gauge to what I presume is "2".

How can I tell if it is boosting correctly???

As it is it is still extremely quick, so if as lots of you say the wastegates do weaken, then bring on more boost!!!

Does an boost enhancer cure this and woulkd it be beneficial to fit one.

Cheers for your time yet again

Lee

The 250BHP Turbo should make a max of 0.82 bar of boost (12 psi) from about 3000rpm onwards. Atmospheric pressure is 1 bar so your gauge should read 1.82 when you are pressing on [:D] If you watch the gauge as you approach the upper reaches of the rev counter you will see the boost start to drop off. This is because the wastegate is being forced open and you are losing lots of lovely boost straight down the exhaust []

The dash gauge has quite small markings when you get over to the 2 bar section so it is difficult to be totally accurate. It is also an electronic gauge in that it takes its reading from the ECU in the passenger footwell, and not directly from the manifold. When people fit aftermarket mechanical gauges (like myself) it can be seen that the dash gauge is a bit slow to react. If you watch an aftermarket gauge as you approach the upper reaches of the rev counter you will see the boost drops off much quicker that is shown on the dashboard one.

A BE is a simple valve that prevents the wastegate from opening too early. It enables the car to hold the boost for longer and maintain its full 250bhp closer to the redline. It does make the car a lot quicker without increasing peak power, and reduces turbo lag. A standard cars electronics will not allow you to make more than the 0.82 bar of boost, if you 'overboost' it will cut fuel to the injectors (which feels horrid [] ). Simply switching the ignition off and on will reset this.

Thanks for that Paul.

My car does seem to read correctly then on its gauge.

May still purchase a BE as it is nice and shiny aswell.

Thanks again.

Better go out for another spin in it to make sure.

They are bloody addictive these vehicles.

BOOOOSST its great

Cheers

Good call Lee, being shiny is more than good enough reason to purchase anything. It was why I replaced my dump valve, granted there might have been some small doubt that the original one wasn't working quite as it should (or at least that's what I told my wife) but on the whole it was because the new one was shiny.

I could get away without the small K&N on the belt housing vent but it doesn't do any harm (or any good either), it is realy, realy shiny though. [;)]

Could not agree more with you John.

Shiny is best and another excuse to take her out for a spin
is more than good enough for me.

Only had it 5 days and do not know how I lived without it.

Nice having the Galaxy TDI by day as I get to appreciate the full brunt
of its power by weekends.

Cheers

Thats what i have, dont know what he means by overboost protection mind, maybe he means the locknut , but it dont return back to stock, me thinks hes talking nonsense...

Looks like a manual boost controller, thought you could them for about £40 or less, but could be wrong.
I assumed he was on about overboost protection in the event of the unit failing.

Nah, it's effectively a Boost Enhancer. Slim has it because it is the better of the two options from Guru (via ProMax) - offered in place of the Reliaboost.

Thats the second time that user has tried to auction that device in the past month. It's officially known as an Accuboost. It had no bidders last time, maybe worth a low bid in the hope he'll come down in desperation.

See you all at Frontrunner tomorrow (Fen I hope I rememebr to put your strut brace in the boot tonight [:D] )

I'm sure I worked out who it was - someone either on here or on Titanic, but I can't think who now. Anyone owning up?

I just looked at the seller's feedback and Rick was last to add any, so he can tell us if we know the seller I guess.

Seems to be making a bit of cash too [:D]

He's bought brake decals at $5 on US ebay and is selling them here for £9.99
The Accuboost was $62 on US ebay and is selling it here for £75
and he's sold a number of bonnet badges at £19, when you can buy them from dealers here at £14.99

Excellent business acumen [:)]
