Booster Seats for 993

Am looking at buying a 993 but am concerned at how the insertion of child booster seats (our kids are 7 and 9) will affect the headroom in the back....i.e. I do not want to buy the car then find that their heads graze the window panel! I know that Porsche OPC supply them at c. £180 for 2 piece unit and I am guessing/hoping that they fit snugly into as opposed to on top of the seats. Is that true? Having recently driven a 996 also I assume that there is no issue here as the headroom/general space is greater in the back.

Can someone please clarify this?

Thank you.

Hi Stephen

I purchased two Porsche Prince seats for my 993, but had to pay more than the original cost price on Ebay for them. These would certainly be OK for young ones but not sure how long your 9 yr old would last in one. I would have thought at that age a booster seat may not be required in the back of a 911 (although the law may say otherwise).

Best bet is to call Stuart at Quickfit in Stanmore. 020 8206 0101. A mine of information and plenty of Porsche experience re childrens car seats.

Hi Stephen

I've got our 3 year old daughter in a Porsche Zoom 2 piece seat (base detaches from backrest). I bought it from PCT for about £180 brand new. I think they may be hard to come by nowadays, non of the OPCs I called had them in stock. I tried the seat in the back of my neighbour's 996 C4S and it was a much better fit than my 993 (seat base of the 996 doesn't seem to taper as much as a 993's does.

As Richard pointed out though, I very much doubt you'd need booster seats in a 993 for a 7 and 9 year old. My neighbour's 7 year old daughter has sat in the back of my 993 and without a booster seat it looked an ideal size for her.

May be worth checking with your local police station about whether or not you actually need one as the seat back rest is v. short and seat belt quite low.

I would imagine your children would be hitting their heads off the roof if you had them in booster seats.

Hello. Thanks very much for your and the other members' comments. I called Stuart in Stanmore and he advised the following:

i) Booster seats required by law for all children <1.35 m
ii) The booster seats (2 part) for 993/996 do not sit flush on the seat and add a minimum of 2-3 inches height
iii) Booster seats not allowed in front if there is an Airbag in the car

This additional height on the back seat will make it nigh on impossible for either my son (7) or daughter (9) to be comfortable in the back of a 993 (and likely a 996)...head would graze window panel which is not ideal!

So it is with much and deep regret that I will not continue my search for a 993 but will wait till they hit 1.35m and do not need a booster seat and then renter the 'game'....I'll get a BMW in the interim where at least I know the kids can sit with booster seat in some comfort. At least then we will all be able to get in the car....

The law is a complete ass as far as cars like 993 (and quite possibly 996) are concerned re back seats and inability to sit with booster seats.

Yes it is possible to deactivate it but this does not help the booster seat issue in the back seats per my original comment - so for the next couple of years until the kids are beyond the booster requirement then it's goodby porsche...

The 993 seats are fairly snug and therefore the only need (to my mind) for a 9 year to have a seat is to satisfy legal requirements. Many 9 year olds are over 1.35metres (around 4'5" in old money) so check to see if you really need one for the 9 year old.

You could remove the seat squabs, and just put the boosters directly on the carpet- would save a couple of inches. As I think of it, there must surely be a market for a type approved booster which replaces the seat squabs.

FWIW, the Targa has a useful bit of extra interior headroom with the roof closed.

I wouldn't give up without giving a few a try... there certainly are booster cusions which fit- Graco springs to mind for some reason. When I were a lad, I would have been only too pleased to squeeze into the back of a 911!

The law is a right joke with regards to kids seats. The statistics don't even add up that the government has issued. The back of a 911 is a small and relatively safe place to be. The seatbelt is much lower than in a standard front seat and therefore what is the point of a booster seat?

Thanks. My 9 year old is close to the 1.35m level but my son at 7 years old is c. 8-10 cms off. So I will part ways from Porsche for 1-2 years then likely return to 996 territory where there is more room and by then both kids will no longer need booster seats.

Hi Stephen, the law is indeed an ass on this issue. If the belts fit your children correctly without a booster seat then why should they be forced to use one? To be realistic, if you're not using a booster seat what are the chances that you'll get caught?

I would also echo Roberts comments re the extra headroom in the targa.

David.
