Boot/Engine Opening Levers

Bit of a problem trying to get yesterdays Costco shopping trip into the 996 with three year old in the back - front boot/trunk lever wouldn't open (it has been temperamental in the past) so I lost valuable beer case space. Tried engine cover lever and it too wouldn't work - it has always been the easier of the two.
All fitted in after some careful distribution but looked a bit comical with everything piled up and over small (uncomplaining) child.
Any suggestions? Car hadn't been used for a few weeks and has been in garage.
If they are stuck, how do you get in?

I expect the latch mechanism needs some lubrication. To get the lid open on a 996 with mechanical levers, you need to get to the emergency release cable and give it a tug. This is located in the headlight area on the passenger side. Unfortunately, you have to remove (or pull out the way) the wheel arch liner, get your hand in there, and feel around for a cable with a loop on the end.
