They do this when on display, as the frequently open bonnet runs the battery down of course.

Most likely the bulb, but the microswith on the latch can stick, which stops the light coming on.
I had the same issue and it was the microswitch. Open the bonnet, then flick the bonnet release catch a few times. Sometimes the microswitch sticks and just needs a little extra movement to budge it. If that doesn't work, try the bulb.
