boot not opening again!

hiya all, a while back i had a problem with the boot not opening and a replacement cable was ordered as the original had snapped after no problems once job was done, the boot now will not open, the electric mechanism is fine but its not catching[i can hear it ] so refusing to open, i am right in thinking same problem again and go ahead and order another cable? or could it be something else? any ideas appreciated cheers jason p
 
OK does it open if you try it from the key at the boot and lift the tailgate at the same time? If so could be that your catches need adjusting. Also not may of them come up on their own. They will if the gas struts are good and the seal is in good condition. Otherewise they often need a helping hand. Sometimes if you nip off the M6 securing the catches inside the boot (and I mean literally an eighth of a turn) this does the trick. The catches do bind a little sometimes for some reason.
 
get someone to operate the footwell switch continuously whilst you give the rear hatch a horizontal shake side to side whilst simultaneously tugging it up. It should at least open if the lock mechanism is working properly.
Then you can re-adjust the hatch pins

Did the hatch open at all after you replaced the cable ?
 


Similar problem occurred with mine and it was the alloy arm snapped at the motor. Yet to source replacement though.

Another way to tackle it is to wriggle into the boot and give the bowden cable which operates the boot catches a good tug with your hands (simply grab it in the middle and pull it towards you - you may need gloves/a rag to protect your hands) while pushing up on the tailgate glass with your shoulder. This will pull the catches further and harder than the motor does, and should release them.

You then have the boot open and can do some troubleshooting. Taking the catches off (very easy) and cleaning them throughly, before putting some light grease on and re-attaching them to the car would be a good way forward. As would adjusting the pins on the boot.

I bet that, between the cleaning and the adjusting, you'll have the boot opening just fine. (Presuming it's not a broken motor arm or snapped cable, that is.)

thanks all, rob, it wont open with the key[but didnt before cable was replaced] and peanut, its worked fine after cable was fitted, i tried jiggling the boot around, side to side whilst mrs p was operating the boot release inside the car but still wont open, so off to specialists on sat am, although i love my s2 and shes going into daytona for paintwork in the new year its irritating little things like this that get me thinking 968,i am sure once i drive these thoughts will be banished...for the while at least. cheers jason p ps thanks oli but as you know i am not the most technical of people and combine that with" heavy hands and knowing nearly bugger all" i fear i could do more damage then good, bloody irritating though when car is driving and running so well, regards jason

Def sounds like the cam wheel/lever having sheered. A 968 just has all these problems stored up too y'know !

If it is the lever on the motor then the motor noise will have changed - instead of it sounding laboured and strained, it should sound free-spinning and easy (and much quieter.)

'Tis an easy fix, I imagine. If it is the lever, that is.

It's a constant battle for me to open my boot. The lever doesn't seem to do anything and I have to get out, turn the key and pull it up a few times before it opens.
I will get round to sorting out when I have time though
 
Fixed mine by changing the gas struts. That unlatches the pins. However, the microswitch for the key operated opening seems to have given up the ghost! Anyone else had that problem?
 
Fingers crossed it's not the cam/arm on the motor shaft as that iitty little bit is over now £40+, which is bordering on theft in my book [:mad:]

A few years ago when I replaced mine they were £6.03 plus VAT !!
