Boot release

The new owner of my S2 Cab has locked the keys in the boot. Both seat backs are up and the release button only works with the key in the ignition.

Any ideas before we get the crow bar out

...the morning I was taking my car to the mechanic to have discs etc sorted. The car had been stood for two weeks (waiting) and there was a very heavy frost. Result being I couldn't start the car. Combination of not been started and cold had dropped the voltage on the battery. Found that my rear hatch was frozen shut, so after squirting in some anti freeze got in the boot from the inside and tugged a bit too hard (probably due to the frost and my blood starting to boil) managed to snap the cam in two.
So another bit of metal work to do!

Got round to fixing my boot release properly finally.
I was about to make another cam when I bought a second hand motor, just for the cam. This one broke in my hands when testing the strength of it. So that was no. 2.
So I had to make one anyway.
Pic is of the remaining halves of the snappy alloy ones and the replacement.
Got a spare motor.

While I was about it, put an ally handle on to enable to pull in the right direction and to make it abit easier in those dead battery etc. times.

Excellent work, when i was fitting and adjusting my new catches i had to crawl into the boot from the front seats to pull that cable, it took some pulling to get the boot to release, probably for the reason you had made that one. It helps pull in the right direction, something which is hard to do when its a flat thin bar (which bent unfortunately, managed to straighten it but wouldn't want to reply on it like that too often) They must have been saving money or weight for 50/50 weight distribution []

apparently there's a emergency boot release inside the nearside rear wing if you remove the plastic vent - it doesn't tell you that in the handbook does it ??

Is that something peculiar to Cabriolets? All the Coupes that I have been in do not need the key in the ignition for the boot button to work [&:]

Yes, it's so you can park with the hood down and still have the boot locked securely.

mine needs the key in to work

The cable has probably broken at the release (it happens all the time)
Take a look under the carpet (where the lock is) and I bet the cable will have snapped. Pretty easy fix.

i got it working now god nows how but moving the key in the lock fast seemed to have done something, weird

Maybe it had just jammed then.

Perhaps a little lubrication of the mechanism would be worthwhile?
If I recall it's normally lightly greased.

You can find that the struts loose their push in the winter, probably as the cold gas isn't as enthusiastic. Replacement struts aren't that expensive but may not make any difference.

Ahhhhh...the bain of the 944 owners life!!

Mines never been right...you may find that you have to live with it.

The only time I had the boot so it would open automatically when I pressed the release, it used to fly open when I went over a bump. Now, I just give it a bit of manual assistance once I've pushed the release.

Oh, is it meant to open when you push the button? (As in, rise up on the struts). Mine doesn't. You press the button and then give it a bit of a tug and it opens.

Yes - you need new struts Oli []
