If starting from a complete car it really requires removing the rear 1/4 trim panels, which in turn requires removing the belts and the rear seat. Then the next problems are glue and sound deadening related, on my 968 for example the rear seat squab is glued down amazingly strongly, on earlier 944's this is not so bad, but you need to lift it at the edges to get the carpet in. When removing the old wheel arch carpets you tend to find that the felt sound deadening underneath falls apart so needs to be carefully separated if you want to retain it. On my 968 I will try to do it without completely removing the rear 1/4 panels as I don't want the PITA of pushing the edges of the vinyl back in again around the windows and door frame seal. I know it will make the job more fiddly but its a fiddly job anyway.
Ultimately its not a nightmare job but I know it will take me a solid afternoons work to do it on the 968 and its a job I have done before on the S2.
