Bootlid catch problem and fuel question!

Hello everyone! I recently (yesterday) just bought my first Porsche and Im very pleased so far! However there are a couple of things I would like to find out/fix

The previous owner had been using lead replacement addative in the fuel, Does the car need to have this addative used to prevent the valves from dying or are the 944's unleaded safe??

Secondly The drivers side boot catch does not seen to want to hole the boot shut at that side! even despite me replacing said catch today with another one from a car at the breakers yard which was in really good condition! Its really annoying because someone could lift the bootlid easily at that side and end up shattering the rear window!

Hi and welcome. You'll have to tell us more about the car; age, model etc. ('cos we're nosy).

Unleaded is fine in all 944s.

The boot catch probably just needs the pin adjusted so it protrudes more into the catch in the back of the car. There is a locknut on it, then it's threaded. Might be corroded up however, but some PlusGas soaked in for a few days should shift it.

Also make sure the internals of the catch are clean and well lubed, it's designed that water drains through the catch so they can get very gunky. Don't overtighten the nuts that hold the catch to the bodt, they can pinch the jaws and stop them opening and closing properly.

Congrats on your early Christmas present - pics please [:D]

Congrats on your new purchase.

You found a 944 in a breakers yard? Where? All the ones 'round me are full of boring tedia, nothing as interesting as a 944 ... All the best with curing the problem.

Yeh I tried adjusting the pin but still no joy :( I got the new catch off the one in the breakers and it still doesnt work right lol! perhaps the overtightening thing is the problem though now that you mention it! ill try that next!

Theres loads of 924's and 944's in my local scrap yard that i always go to! but im away up in scotland and they dont do delivery, however the one i got the boot catch from is called SCB in edinburgh :) had a porsche club sticker on the windscreen too!

Mine is a 1983, Guards Red 944 Lux, half leather and pinstripe interior, full porsche service history, 138,000 miles 2.5l 8v.
Its totally rust free, has the 944 s spotlights and slotted rear valance and other than that its just a very very tidy example! it was originally bought from Glen Henderson in glasgow and its lived up here all of its life! I think the furthest it went was to a gentleman in dundee before finally ending up back here in glasgow :)

Its currently got design 90 wheels on it but they sit waaaaaaaay into the arches and it looks silly, I got a set of 5 spoke Azev A's with it though and they look like they should sit better so Ill stick them on either tommorrow or wednesday before i try and get some pictures :)

Where do I get myself one of these quick response throttle cams from by the way guys?

If you are looking to sell the design 90's, give me a shout.

If you want to keep them then a set of 1" spacers and 66mm long bolts on each corner will help fill out the arches.

Hi m8, I will be selling them yes, there not bad nick but was going to refurb them before selling. If you want to make me an offer then thats cool! :)

Don't know whereabouts in the country you are but there is a Porsche breakers at Shardlow near Derby - PH Sportscars, but when I last went there they commented that they were seeing less and less 944's these days but are seeing loads of Boxsters. They've recently branched out to MX5's as well.

Thanks ... I'm in London, East End, and every scrapyard here is jammed with Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics. Eugh!

It's possible to adjust the 'tension' of the mechanism on either catch and it could be that the drivers side has been adjusted to point that it is actually holding the jaws open and preventing them from gripping the catch (changing the catch wouldn't improve the situation as the linkage wouldn't be affected). From memory the linkage has a ball and socket attachment underneath the catch housing - remove this and then unscrew the end (it's a bit like a track rod end arrangement) in order to release the tension - re-attach it and see how the jaws now sit - it's all a bit trial and error. Whilst your in there give the mechanism a good greasing - the cable from the motor rubs on the surround and will eventually snap (although a replacement cable is only around £11 from the OPC). Check also the condition of the casting that bolts to the top of the motor - mine's just snapped in two and a new one (franchised part) is £100.

hope this helps.

BLIMEY! £100? Yikes!

There MUST be a cheaper way ... silver-solder the old one back together? Custom cast a new one?

Whoosh! 100 big ones is a lot!

Ian is right the linkage it is a ball and socket attachment, mine worked when you opened it with the key but when you used the switch in the car it would only open on one side as the other side would disconect from the linkage. I screwed the ball socket in about half a turn and it works fine now. By the way ian what is your car like so i can keep a look out for you as im in redcar nearly evey day ??

Yeah £100 is a bit of an ask. Options so far are:

  • Breakers yard
  • a colleagues brother works in europe and is going to try and source one for me
  • get my brother to cast a new one at work/repair the existing part
  • continue living without a boot!
