BOSE Upgrade (with or without)?

Hi All,

I have a 996 with a Bose system upgrade and looking for a 997 C2S.

I'm looking for a 997 with the Bose upgrade but how much better is it over the standard system?

Not much IMHO.

You'd be better off looking for the right car and forgetting all about the sound system. [;)]

I agree. I think most Bose equipment is over rated in any case. That said I would guess that the majority of 997s will have the Bose system fitted. I had a quick look at cars for sale at Porsche Centres and out of the first 10 I looked at, (Carreras from 2005-2011), 9 had Bose![:)]

Yeah mine has Bose and it seems fine, I'm not blown away by it though...I think the audio system in my BMW was better. Don't know what the normal one sounds like though. I agree with the statements above that finding the right car/options combo is probably more relevant than the audio system...

Our Cayman has BOSE (bought as 2nd owner) but I'm sticking with standard audio in the Macan.

I have B&O at home to be able to listen to things "properly".

Anyway, shouldn't we be listening to the engines when we're driving?

Just got my first Porsche - a 997.2 C4S convertible. The car is terrific, but the only disappointment is the sound system. It has the Bose upgrade but if I had paid out £700 for this from new I'd be mighty pissed off. The bass is mush, the treble lacks crispness is and the stereo image indistinct. This is in stark contrast to my other car - a new BMW 535d which has the Proressional sound system upgrade (also £700) and sounds terrific. Especially the bass.
Given the marvellous noise made by the 3.8 flat six you don't want to choose a 997 based on the sound system.

I always felt my cabriolet had the worse of all Bose systems I've ever had in a Porsche
I think the lack of parcel shelf where the Bose bass cabinet goes is the reason why.

As long as I could hear pop master I was happy listening to the flat 6 [:D]

An area porches have been lacking. I'd like to hear the new Burmeister stereo in the 991.

The standard sound plus I IMHO pants, a I am tall and my head is near the roof - dot hear much on cruise on the motorway, which is when I use the stereo. So the Bose is a bonus
, its not great however on the gen 1,noticably better on the Gen 2 but overall adequate as opposed to great.

As per everyone else's advice, choose your preferred spec and see what stereo you end up with, the engine sound much better anyway.

Thanks guys,

I think the best option is to go to a garage where they have two coupes, one with and one without so I can hear the difference.
My 996 Gen 2 has the BOSE and is a great sound system, so I don't want to be disappointed if the 997 isn't as good.
This would bug me every time I turned the stereo on!

My Landrover Disco TD5 had a boggo standard sound system, what a sound ! vehicle accoustics i suppose.

I can tell you now, the Bose gets better in each generation. It will be noticeably better than your 996. ;-)

It just doesn't match the posh stuff - Harmon Kardon, Naim, Meridian, Martin Logan etc that you get in other similarly priced brands...

I've had both with and without Bose in the GenII 997 models. I think the BOSE sound is pretty poor and having the standard system is fine. The PSE sound is much nicer however [:)]

I guess it depends on what you listen to?
I like my Rock music so the BOSE is great.
It sounds like everyone is different and for my own satisfaction I will need the BOSE on my tick list.
It might not be the best sound but it will be better than the standard, otherwise it wouldn't be an extra!

When I collected my 997 C4S with bose I was really dissapointed. (GEN 1) But I spent about half an hour pressing buttons and setting it up and now its the best sound system I have ever had. The sound is rich and clear with amazing tones and pitches. If you lower the rear seat backs the rear subwoofers also help take on a new life.
So you get to spend a bit of time just sitting in one of the best places in the world making it perfect for your ears.
Dissadvantage is you are then torn between turning on the music or leaving it switched off and listening to the exhaust/engine note...depends on my mood which I choose :).
On another note regarding GEN 1 having no bluetooth or ipod connectivity, I purchased a cheap radio transmitter that sits inside the centre armrest and plugs into the 12v port. I now have ipod connectivity! . The reason to mention this here is that I had to set up the bose again as it sounded duff again. Advantage was an excuse given to the wife for apparently just sitting in my car for a bit

I have the Bose on my 997.2 and it sounds okay, but it does have the Dolby 5.1 surround sound which sounds good. Not sure if earlier versions of the car have this. Having said that, I only have 5.1 on one album, so not a great deal of material.

As before, I would look at other aspects of the car (personally, sports exhaust) and not bother too much about the sound system.

Best of luck.

Regards.

Barry.
