bottom and top end rebuilds

Hi there,

I am aware that a lot of cars have had top end rebuilds. How robust is the bottom end of a 3.2?

How much would I be looking at for a top end rebuild and how much for a full engine engine rebuild at a porsche specialist?

Thanks

Martin.

Bottom end is pretty much bullet proof, assuming the engine has had regular & frequent oil changes.

Reported top end issues seem to centre around valve guide wear.

Costs depend very much on what else you do while you are in their. The machine work for my top end and new valve guides was IIRC something like £300, but you have to add labour for engine in/out and heads on/off - somewhat oversimplified but you get the picture. If you did nothing but guides you *might* get by with a bill as small as £1500-2000. Most everyone takes the opportunity to do a bunch of engine out, "while you are in there" type of jobs. So I did : 930S clutch, lightweight pressure plate, cams, race Ti valve retainers, race valve springs, rering, stretch type rod bolts, head studs, chain ramps and chains, SSI exhaust, backdate heat etc. I built a 7000+rpm motor with a 8000rpm valvetrain, which is more than is really necessary, but the "while you are in there" bug is pretty strong [;)] You can keep the cost to a reasonable level if you are careful sourcing some of the parts yourself and if you have a sensible plan for the engine. I didn't want to do things twice so I did it "right" once as a platform for the future. My bill isn't representative as I had a couple of favours that reduced the cost, but you could do most of what I did for around £5k if you pick your mechanic carefully. This seems a lot in terms of the purchase price of these cars but as they don't really depreciate its kind of acceptable [&:] and a good rebuild and remap is going to add 30+hp to your car and another 150k miles of fun to your life.
