Bottom of the doorcard is wet

Hi all,

I was checking my doors after all this lovely rain, I noticed the passenger side doorcard is damp. It's only the very bottom of the carpet but I can run my finger down it and squeeze water out.

HELP please.

I recently had the same problem. You need to replace the inner door membrane, its probably degraded over time and is letting water in. I needed to replace both the driver and passenger door membranes. Got both membranes from opc for £64. The best thing is they are cut to size and have adhesive already on it. You just need to peel the film off and it sticks straight on to the door. For both doors it took me one hour. Very easy to remove the door cards.
 
With all this rain I noticed on Passenger door card right at the very bottom the carpet was very wet, just the first half about 12 inches.

I used this guide http://www.ecoutez.net/boxster/door-panel-removal/ to remove the door panel, was excellent as I do not have airbags I skipped the battery removal and the screw behind the airbag cover, the rest worked perfectly.

So its bones dry inside, which leads me to believe the water is running down the rubber, sitting on the door sill part and touching the carpet at the bottom of the doorcard and hence making it wet.

Sandeep, when you talk about the inner membrances this is the ones in the doorcards is it ? I am thinking mine is the rubber seal that you see when you open the door, what the door closes on, is that what you were talking about ? If yes is that 64 for 2 or 1 ? IF no any idea what the cost of that seal would be ?

1 - I also realized the drivers doorcard has been messed with and a couple of the clips are broken as it does not snap in fully, any ideas on how much they are to replace, i guess it would be an OPC part ?
2- The plastic phillips screw in the door pocket screwhead it badly damaged, again is this an OPC part ?

The inner membrane sits between the door card and the door itself, its behind the door card. Its shaped to fit the door, it may have a tear somewhere which cold be letting in water. When I examined mine it looked fine until I noticed a tiny tear where water was getting in. The membrane from Porsche is about £32. The plastic screw you can get from Porsche and the clips, they won't be expensive. I also thought first that it was water sitting on the sill making the carpet on the door wet. You have the exact same symptoms as my car did. The very bottom of the carpet on the door was wet. I've replaced both membranes on mine as both sides were wet. When I looked at the old membranes I think they were the original ones which is 10 years old. They were very badly degraded. After all this rain we've had both my door carpets are bone dry which proves it was the membrane leaking. It's worth trying to replace the membrane first as its not that expensive and say how you go with it, but I'm 99.9% sure it is that.

Solid my man, so your prblem was resolved by the membrane replacement, my driver door is a ok, so I only need to sort out the passenger door. However one more factor for me, I am planning to upgrade my stereo system, and I have gone mad and I planning to get the Jehnert doorboards:

So I think I need to speak to the installer first to find out if they keep the membrance 100% in tact or if they cutaway at any of it, in which case sounds like I would need to make my own DIY solution, OR I am also getting him to dynmat the doors and I am not sure if this would act as a waterproofing barrier or not.

Too many factors [:-]

Any ideas or have I gone out of scope now :)

Yeah the membrane sorted out the problem, no more leaks which I am really pleased about. Regarding the stereo upgrade, its probably best to speak to them to see if they will interfere with the membrane. Last thing you want is to replace the passenger door membrane and they tear it. If they are just replacing the door card for a new modified one they shouldn't need to interfere with the membrane. If your drivers door is ok then the membrane is still in ok condition, maybe worth having a look at it when they replace the door card for you stereo upgrade to see what condition it is in. Chances are that they probably are the original membranes and your passenger door one has given away first.
 
So I took the door card off again and looked as close as I could, really could not find anything, although I guess it could be like a pinhole. I have left the doorcard off and close the door, see if there any water trail, this might help trace it. Actually looks in good condition for 10 years old.

Yet to call the installer, wanted to nail the problem first.

Damm your good, you nailed it again. So i got a water bottle and poured water all over the top and left it a few mins to run its course. Wen in throw the drivers door and i could see a small puddle had formed on the rubber seal, and sure enough its coming from under the membrane, the adhevsive has obviously got a gap, although its not a bladently obvious.

So I called the installer, in order to dynmat the car properly, they are going to take the membrance out, dynmat then and then attach the membrane back, he said that he gurantees 99% of the time when they take the membrane off it tears, and they do there best to patch it up.

It sounds like I am better off buying a new pair, let them do the dynmat and then get them to attach a brand new set of membranes, keeping the door dry and protecting the speakers.

Called Reading OPC (near my workplace) they hold them in stock and sure enough its £32 a side. 11p for platics clips, and 16p for the plastic phillips screw.

Hi Jeegnesh, glad you got it sorted, yeah its better to replace both membranes for new ones especially when they are only £32 each. At least you know they will last another 10 years.

And to Velryba, why don't you just buy original membranes from OPC as they are only £32 each plus they already have adhesive on them ready to go straight on the door and they are cut to size so no messing around.
 
I didn't need to replace my membranes[:)] all I did was to add some glue along the whole of the bottom edge of the door membrane and more importantly around the holes in the membrane where the door clips push into.

I noticed that some of my water was coming in from the top of the door clip holes, there's normally no glue on the membrane around the top of the holes.
The glue I used was from Halfords and is coloured black, it's used to seal around glass car windows, when dry (10 minutes) it turns to flexible rubber.

I got some pic's of the job somewhere...

Adding the glue would also have fixed my issue, as a temp solution I glued the bit where the leak was coming from and sure enough the carpet is dry again. But I think due to the dynmat they will be taking the membrance out, I am probably better off buying a new membrane, seems the safest option.
 
Ok took it all apart and have a few questions...

Brake booster - is it the part located under the battery plate? Looked all dry there, but I didn't open that as it seamed sealed.



Lift sensor - the white box was under the water and the siren was making some funny noises (short-cuts due to the water), stopped now, but there seams to be some water inside the white box - good or bad????????



Now each time the car is locked, we get the double bleep as something is open, but all is closed

I took the panel of on the passenger side and all looked in order and dried out.
The drain hole was clear, so I don't understand where the water was coming from

Just in case I have taken out the rubber plug, which is in the front of the door, so let me know if that is a big mistake

I was also looking at Jehnert at some point and I am curious as to what Amplifier they recommend. It looks quite compact and a good fit considering it has to power 4+ speakers to deal with.
On the door membranes wait I would recommend you wait until the doors are Dynamat and the wiring completed before you put them on. They come with a sticky bead along the edges which I found sufficient enough for a good seal.
BTW don't go too crazy on the Dynamat as it does add to the weight of the doors which you will definitely notice. The outer door skin already should have an anti vibration pad so in theory only the internal frame should need one.
