Bought a 964

Just thought I would share with you that I have added a 964 to my stable.

It was the one being sold by Anissut.

1991 baltic blue, with lots of history for the past 10 years and 158,000 miles.

It has a noisy tappet and a few oil leaks so despite the "they all do that Sir" advice I am going to go for a full engine rebuild.

Its booked in for 30 June.

If I'm going to own it, I might as well get it right.

If anyones at the Silverstone Classic i will see you there.

All advice welcome, its quite a different experience to my 996!

Welcome aboard, I'm sure you'll enjoy the 964. I'd be interested in the hearing the details of the engine rebuild as it progresses, i.e. condition of engine, which parts have worn, etc.

Lucky man. A perfect choice. Roll your sleeves up and get stuck in!

Let me know who you go with for a full engine rebuild. Plenty of recommendations I'm sure.

The best advice I can give you is give the 964 plenty of time to bond to it. I came from a 986 and after a few weeks thought to myself WTF have I done buying this OLD car! After 3 months I started to 'get' the 964. After 6 months I started to realize what it was potentially capable of. Now after 5 years I KNOW what it is capable of. Even though the 986 has now been replaced by a 987, it's the 964 that excites me the most when I drive it. [:)]

Thanks all.

I've 'interviewed' a few potential repairers and taken lots of advice from chums on 911uK and elsewhere.

It is booked in at Zentrum in Nottingham.

A mixture of small enough to care, but large enough so that they can work on it without the distractions of phone ringing, other jobs to do etc.

They have done plenty of these and seem to know their stuff.

Of course we won't really know until it comes apart.

Very tempted to do it myself, but cannot justify the time.

It will all be logged and photographed as I go.

Good choice Peter, sadly you'll be off the road for a bit then. I'll chat to the guys about it when I get across to Zentrum next week.

If I can help out with anything, to save you travelling over you know how to get in touch.

Cheers,

Andy.

Couldn't agree with you more Steve. I came out of a 944S2 & I felt exactly the same way as you, but as you drive it it gets under your skin. If I could have kept both I would have because I wouldn't exactly say one is better than the other, they both have their strengths in different areas, they are just different.

Steve has put it in a nutshell. A 964 can take a while to get used to, but once owned, always under your skin.

Cars have tended to 'own me' rather than the other way around and never more so than with a Porsche - which is probably not surprising given I'd wanted one since before I was even legally old enough to drive!
