Bouncy Car

I have been playing with my suspension and fitted new front tyres lately. I am running Gaz Gold. They are 6 clicks away from full hard at moment, 22 clicks range on the front, so you could say they are at 73% stiffness if that makes sense! Rears are set up the same. I have also fitted new Rainsport 3 tyres on the front, these seem to be a very soft tyre with a fair degree of sidewall flex evident, for example if you rock the car when it is stationary it will wibble a bit side to side on the front tyres. Was on the motorway at the weekend at cruising about 80mph the car seemed very bouncy over undulations. Not worn shocker bouncy, just seemed to be making a bigger deal of the undulations than I can remember from before. Not evident at slow speeds or much evident really at higher speeds. I had been running 32psi all round but hiked the fronts up to 36psi to see if that helped, but never made a whole lot of difference.

Anyway, do we think I need to stiffen the shocks further or could it be the tyres causing this? Can't say I noticed overly when driving as it still felt pretty planted, it was more the good lady suggesting she should have worn a sports bra! [:D]

Anwers on a postcard!

Cheers

Rather than stiffening the shocks aren't you actually adjusting the rebound rates? Too high a rebound rate will make it seem bouncy on undulating Tarmac. Try setting it softer for the road and stiffer for smooth track surfaces.

You want the rebound rate to be a bit slower so it smooths out the bumpy transitions in the road.

Aha you may be onto something there, I'll go back a couple of clicks and even up the tyres. Should be fine for fast road then. Probably at a good track setting just now!

Soften the rears. You are probably finding that the car is bucking like a broncho. I used to drive my car on the road, it has GAZ 2 ways and it rode dead flat except when the front shocks had leaked or the rear was too stiff.

I ran tyre pressures at 36 and found it both a bit hard and bouncy. At the time my front suspension was harder than the rear which I have recently adjusted to be just as firm so I reckon I am running somewhere around the same stiffness as you. One thing though I dropped my tyre pressures down to 34 all round and it seems much better.

Thanks guys. I notched the fronts back 2 clicks and same on rear (although that's 4 clicks but you know what I mean!) and put all tyres to 32psi and it has calmed down a fair bit and is more compliant over undulations.

Probably optimum for road now, and 2 clicks back up for any track days! [:D]
