Boxster 2008 gear change not smooth? May be a stupid question?

I've had my Boxster now for 6 months, 5 gears, 08 plate, bought from main dealer and after the first week I noticed the gear change from 1st, 2nd & 3rd were not smooth, definately not like my test drive. So took mit back.

I was told by the service department this was because the car I test drove had 6 gears and they were totally different and would always be smooth on gear changing even before the oil has warmed up?? ( hate to say it, was It a fob off due to being a women)

Took the car back and they did say it was very knotty? they made some adjustments and it was ok for a while but now seems to be getting harder to put into low gears again, even after a long run.

Can some one tell me if this is really the case? or does it need another trip back to the garage. Is it something to do with the clutch linkage?

appreciate your thoughts? Cheers Jayne

It's pretty common that when cold, the gear change is notchy, especially 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd, but when warmed up it should be smooth. For a dealer to suggest otherwise is nonsense. There is a suggestion on the 911uk forum that a change of gearbox oil (to a different make) really helps, but that won't be an option for you if you're on the Porsche warranty. I would suggest that if your OPC won't help, take it to a different one.

If the adjustment last time corrected the shift then clearly it is an adjustment problem again.

The 5 speed box in my opinion is a much smoother change than the 6 speed, Ive had both and i preffer the 5 speed, though the 5 speed i had was the 2.5 and now i have the 3.2.

It is well documented about the 1st to 2nd and 3rd to 2nd baulking on this forum - however take it back - If they agree the change is "notchy" then they should make sure it isnt.

Thanks for the advice, sounds like a bit of a fob off:rolleyes: I've had a few problems with this OPC in getting stuff storted, in the end I had to complaint to HQ before they would accept fixing stuff in the past that was covered under warrantly.

So can I choose any garage as I'm still under 2 year warrantly? can you recommend one? I really would like to be able to find a OPC that offers good service and espically with my first service in 2010.

After a few conversations in the past with other owners it seems they too have changed OPC.

Hi Jayne

Not sure where you are located but I find that the service department at the Leicester dealership is excellent.

I currently have a 2006 Boxster S with a 6 speed box and the gear change is very good even when cold.

My previous Boxster S, 2003 facelift model with a 6 speed box, was notchy in the low gears when cold. I had a specialist check and realign the cables which didn't make much difference and then had the gearbox oil changed with, I think, fully synthetic oil. That resulted in some improvement but on the whole that car had the worst gear change of all of the Porsches that I have owned. The specialist told me that 986 Boxsters and 996s have poor gear changes generally.

I have known rear engine mount wear problems causing gear selection problems but I would not expect this on an 08 car. Older 986's yes but an 08 987 probably not.
