If you're referring to IMS-related problems Andy, these have been avoided in the Gen II Boxsters and Caymans (with DFI) by a redesign which has eliminated the IMS, the camshafts being driven directly from the crankshaft.

Worth bearing in mind if your budget can stretch that far.

Cayman IMS was improved in late '06 by a change of bearing design and so 3.4 Boxsters should have the later design then Gen2 DFI Engines were designed to eliminate the IMS all together.

I think the issue with the cayman / boxster 3.4 is the cylinder no 5 scoring caused by overheating and oil starvation. Simple fix is to fit the LN engineering low temp thermostat and ensure the water pump and coolant are watched closely for issues/ leaks. The 2.7 M97 engine doesnt suffer the same issue though. Cases of IMS failure seem to be less frequent on the M97 engine but RMS and IMS issues do still infrequently occur.

Does the DFI Engine potentially suffer from this issue or was it also designed out like the IMS?

It might be worth looking on the Hartech site for a comprehensive/definitive answer to this Robin, but I'm not aware that it has as yet been flagged up. One would have hoped that the issue has been addressed by Porsche.

But, unfortunatley, it's still early days..!!
