Boxster 981 - 2012 MY - Upgrade to Infotainment????

Porsche will sell you a PCM retrofit kit from their Tequipment range, but it will cost a small fortune.

Do you have Sound Package Plus (SPP) with your CDR31? If so, upgrading to PCM 3.1 using a mix of used and new parts is quite straightforward and relatively affordable. If you have base CDR31 without SPP then you would need amplification to go with the PCM and that becomes more tricky. Doable (I did it on a 991 GT3 without any impact on warranty renewal) but it's much more involved and probably not for the faint-hearted.

The retrofit kit for PCM3.1 with navigation is about £3300, and I don't think that includes DAB radio. Then add Voice control and phone at £1100, so reckon on about £5000 for a system which is 10+ years old, and wasn't up to date when it was introduced. You can get CarPlay retrofit kits for them, but fitting one would also invalidate the warranty. As James said, fitting a used system is do-able, but not that straightforward. You need activation codes to retrofit most things on a 981, so you'll also need to get those from an unofficial source, and will need a Porsche tester to enter them. The PCM3.1 retrofitting instructions are 28 pages long. Drop me a PM with your email address if you would like a copy.

Hi there,
I have had my 981 2.7l Boxster for just over a year and it is fab apart from one main problem. The infotainment is a CDR with no GPS, DAB etc - fairly poor. I contacted my local OPC and they stated that Porsche don't provide an upgrade kit from CDR to PCM for my model year Boxster. If that is correct then, the only option is to go for an aftermarket kit but as I have a Porsche Warranty any installation of non approved accessories can / will void the warranty. It does seem a bizarre situation in that Porsche say "no" and there is nothing that I can do. Is this right?

I have tried to search through the forum but I couldn't find anything that addresses this situation - any assistance will be appreciated even if it is not what I'd like to hear!

Thanks

David

I recently had Apple Carplay Fitted into my 981 Boxster. MY 13 and am really pleased with it. I hade the Intragated Automotive system fitted. No warranty to worry about so obviously nothing to worry about there. But Sat Nav and radio now all through Apple CarPlay via my phone 👍

I think it is possible to fit the Integrated Automotive Carplay system to a CDR31 but the low resolution screen places some limitations on its display performance. If you went that way, you'd be very unlucky for the OPC ever to know you'd done it, so despite my comments above it could be a good bet.

Back on the PCM route; Richard quite rightly says that the instructions run to 28 pages but a lot of that is taken up by revising the diversity FM antenna system which, to be blunt, isn't really worth doing! As I said, not for the faint-hearted (and post Ukraine, my usually reliable Russian source for codes has become a bit elusive) but it is an option, nevertheless.

Good to see this type of discussion on the PCGB forum!

you are bang on. The screen resolution of the OEM PCM 3.1 is low and as such the Integrated Automotive does show this. Especially on the Home Screen. But other than that I can’t say I notice it whilst using Wase etc

Thanks all for your replies - it is a fairly convoluted procedure. I've had a quick look at the Integrated Automotive website and that might be an avenue to explore. I'll try and give them a call tomorrow. Most appreciated but not like the old days where you'd have a fish around under the dash board, find a positive and earth lead and wire in the radio and cut holes in the door cards for the speakers... It were fun then!

Thanks

David

Just to be clear; I was referring to the low resolution of the base radio CDR31 head unit, which really does have display limitations. PCM3.1, whilst perhaps not being state of the art by today's standards, offers much better resolution and would display for CarPlay perfectly satisfactorily.

I know it's not the same as it used to be twenty or thirty years ago, but I still think it's fun!

Good luck with it.

James
