Boxster 986 Clutch Problems

Can anyone give me some pointers to a problem that has happen to my Boxster. When changing gear the pedal is somtimes jamming when depressed fully and does not spring back up. I can release it by putting the toe of my shoe under it and it pops back up and will then change gear without problems for another 10 or 20 changes and it will do it again. Once it happened and the clutch remained engaged in first gear and the car wanted to drive off. I had to switch off the ignition to disengage the gear. When the engine is not running I can press the pedal a 100 times and it will not jam. I have read about some problems with the clutch plate, could this be the same. As a new owner any info would be much appreciated. Thanks

You've posted in the area for problems with the forum itself.

I'll move this to the Boxster forum where you might get more luck [:D]

I would have suggested the clutch release bearing carrier and fork were jamming but when you mentioned it tried to drive off in first that has to mean the clutch was not disingaging even with your clutch pedal flat on the floor. That would suggest to me a problem with your hydraulics ,master cylinder or slave cylinder . Have you lost any fluid ?Your seals might have been damaged allowing the fluid pressure to be released and re-engaging the gear.?

I am assuming that your clutch is not cable operated [:(] as I have no idea which it is on a Boxter.

Check that the slave cylinder still has its return spring fitted and is not fouling (that is if one is fitted.) Anyone got a manual ?

I had the same problem on my last 944 and many owners reported it on the older cars. Not sure if the Boxster is the same as I haven't been near the clutch but the systems are probably very similar.

On the 944 there is an enormous helper spring on the clutch pedal that does exactly what it says, it puts pressure on the pedal and helps you push it. If there is any leak in the hydraulic system then the back pressure on the pedal reduces and the spring pushes the pedal to the floor. There can be a point in the failure of the system where the loss of back pressure finely balances with the spring pressure and you get a little way down with the pedal and it then starts going down on its own. But a bit of foot under the pedal pushes it up again. Eventually the pedal just sits on the floor as things get worse.

When the pedal goes to the floor on its own is the clutch still engaged or is it slowly re-engaging? If so you have a problem in the hydraulic system either a leak, slave or master cylinder gone. On the 944 I had both slave and master cylinders go at different times in the same way. Are you loosing fluid? If you don't appear to be losing any it could be a very small leak. It could be that there is no leak of fluid just the master cylinder not pushing any fluid down the system so don't let the absence of leaks fool you.

Now typing all this, it's not a cable clutch on the Boxster is it, then I really look daft!

I did wonder about lack of fluid but garage floor where it sat for 3 days before taking it out and having the problem is clean, unless of course the leak is minimal and has been leaking for some time, but I haven't notice any difference in pedal pressure over the last 5 months and I drive it at least 3 to 4 days a week. Thanks for your help

Had this problem on both a 924S and a 944S it was all down to the slave cylinder once changed they were ok.

It will probably be a small bit of fluid under pressure that comes out, mainly on the move so you might see nothing on the garage floor.

Thanks for all your suggestions, I had the Boxster in to the OPC in Aberdeen last week where the slave cylinder and clutch return spring were diagnosed as faulty. Since getting it back all ok and clutch now feels free and easier in movement. Thankfully repair covered under the warranty issued by independant dealer I bought the car from.
