Boxster 987 PCM and sat nav

Hi everyone, having just traded up from a 986 to a 2006 plate 987 which I am delighted with, especially today having enjoyed a top down drive in the some nice winter sunshine. However I have a question about the PCM system. The previous owner of this car swapped out the Porsche unit with a new Sony XAV-AX1000 This unit is useful in that it connects to my iPhone and does Carplay and maps etc. I have to say that FM sounds more like a transistor radio, has anyone else experienced this? The speakers do seem ok when I play music from the iPhone. (My 986 had excellent Bose speakers). The dealer showed me that the original Porsche sat nav and CD boxes are still installed in the frunk, and said they cold be sold for a tidy profit. So my other question is, is it worth selling or keeping the boxes installed in case I want to go back to a Porsche PCM, or would that be too outdated?
Compliments of the season to you all ??

I've changed the head unit in my 05 987. It could be that not all the speakers are hooked up in your car, hence the poor sound quality. You don't say if the new car has Bose or not? Does it have a separate amp?

Personally I'd try and move forwards not revert to the old setup. If you use something like Radioplayer in CarPlay is the sound any better?

I have Bose in my car and fitted a new amp and speaker crossovers. I couldn't hook all the speakers up and the sound is okay (it was pretty rubbish beforehand - I was very disappointed with the Bose in this car)

Hi Richard

thanks for the speedy reply. I don’t know if it has an amp, Will have to check, the speakers don’t appear to be Bose, and I think they all work. Have fiddled with the on-screen sound settings, doesn’t seem to have much bass, only goes to 2. Found the manual online, so will read up on it a bit more and have another checkover this weekend …

thanks again,

Richard

Bose is much harder to swap out so a blessing if non Bose!

Do all the speakers make a noise? I fitted a new amp and crossovers to send the low frequency to the doors (iirc) and high to the dash tweeter

I had Bose in an Audi and it was awesome. I was and am

disappointed with the Boxster Bose set up and have read others are too who have upgraded the speakers

I have wireless CarPlay with a Chinese dongle and 3D printed a wireless QI charger for the armrest console. Happy to make one for others at a modest cost 😎
