Boxster 987 Sport Edition

I have just driven a 2007 Boxster Sport Edition with Tiptronic S transmission at the Lexus dealership in Leicester which operates a branch of Sytner Select used cars. The customer service was quite impressive, and I am quite tempted. The engine was very responsive and felt more lively than another manual 987 that I had driven earlier in the afternoon [is this normal?], although it needed quite a bit of turning over before it fired. The Sales manager said he had also experienced this when he brought it round to show me. He told me they had investigated some "smokiness", but had found nothing amiss. Should I be concerned? The first owner also lived in London, which could mean it has had a lot of use in slow traffic.

I believe they the dealer had changed the front discs and pads, and one rear tyre because the original was down to 2mm. Are all these things indicative of less than ideal care by previous owners?

Finally, if I were to consider this car could anyone recommend a Specialist in the Leicester area who could inspect it - I live in Stratford-upon-Avon.

Many thanks, Alan.

Sytner Select used cars always end up with cars dealers don't want, I have been a few times and thought the cars were not great.

you also cannot just change one tyre if one is that low it unbalanced a high performance car and is skimping and I would want even matching tread on the axel.

2007 Boxster Sport Edition with Tiptronic S transmission, well the 2007 engine can bore score hence smoke, if they have tested it they would have done a Borescope test and have results to hand, if you ask them will look blank at you, and the tip box is dire imo.

I don't think I would buy a Porker from any none main well know dealers selling Porsche, I find a Porsche finds it's way at these dealers due to Major Issues on them and I know people who part ex ****ters to these types of places when they don't want to sell direct to the public.

There are loads of trusted dealers who sell Porsche, stick to those.

inspection is easy, it's a sytner Garage, the Porsche dealer in Leicester is Sytner, get them to do a 111 Porsche inspection on it, then if you do buy it you can put a Porsche warranty on it.

Is the smokiness just on startup or all the time? Do the tyres match (brand) and are they all from a reputable manufacturer? If they don't or aren't I would walk away

One rear tyre might have been punctured. If you were trading a car would you change a tyre first? Or get the brakes done?

I wouldnt be put off. Yes get a Porsche inspection. In my experience they are VERY thorough

I would have thought if other Sytner branches didn't want one of the cars it would go to auction not be sold through Sytner Select

Sytner Select is a good business model, why sell lower end cars at auction when you can get £4k more and not have to put 2 years Porsche warranty on any thing.

It's at Sytner select because it does not meet the main dealer standards or to get to those would cost to much £££

a car sold here is 6 months warranty with a limit £4k a claim so no new engine if it goes pop. circa £15k btw.

Just purchased a 987 gen2 Boxster S from Sytner Select in Wakefield. Very satisfied with the service, they had it serviced at my own independant specialist who gave it a full inspection at my request before purchase. This highlighted some minor problems which were rectified before I bought the car. The car was otherwise given a clean bill of health by my own specialist. After purchase I found clutch switch to be faulty so had it replaced at my own Indy and Sytner paid the bill. Excellent trade in price allowed on my 996 C4 and Boxster was excellent value and low mileage. Courteous service with no problems.

Thank you all for your replies. Changing just one tyre does seem like cutting corners, but it sounds as though Sytner Select should not to be automatically discounted, although proceeding with caution would seem to be wise. I was impressed by the customer service on my first visit to the Sytner Select outlet with the 987 Sport Edition, which was operated from a Lexus dealership. Despite my turning up unannounced, the Sales Manager made sure I had the opportunity of a test drive, even though all his salesmen were tied up with customers, and afterwards he called one away from his customer to make sure all my questions were answered. This contrasted with another Sytner Select outlet in the same city, where despite having an appointment, the car was parked in the showroom with no indication that a test drive was on offer. The salesmen told me to take a look at the car while he carried on with his work. I asked him how long they had had the vehicle, and he said he didn't know, and obviously didn't very much care. They seemed to sell anything from Vauxhalls to Bentleys. Before that I had visited the Select outlet based at the BMW dealership in Leicester. That experience had been closer to the one at the Lexus dealership. The premium standards of the "mother" dealership in both cases seemed to rub off. The car was parked outside ready, and the salesman appeared with trade plates in hand. So, two Select outlets were promising, while I left the other one as quickly as possible. At least he told me about the car in the Lexus outlet.

I have now had the follow-up call about the Sport Edition, and, interestingly, the approach was to put me off considering trading in my BMW for a younger, higher value Boxster that I might find, on the grounds that this would mean having only one car, and he wouldn't want to drive a Porsche everyday.

I think that I shall stick to Porsche specialists as advised by my fellow PCGB members - my local Porsche Centre has already told me that they can't help me as my budget is only between £15,000 and £20,000. Boxsters in this price bracket seem to be passed on by Sytner-run Porsche Centres to Sytner Select outlets.

Today, I also found out the 987 Sport Edition had spent much of its life in London, and I'm not sure that is a good thing. This added my to my original reservations, and I don't think I shall be pursuing this one any further.

I've looked at Synter select before when shopping for a z4m, as far as I could see it was little better than a rac used car warranty and the claim limits were terrible, to be honest they are devaluing their brand by offering such a poor warranty. If they aren't confident in their cars then just don't sell them and send them to auction…

they are are trying to operate in 2 completely different segments of the market however in doing so, devalues their brand massively.

If you want to sell cars with a very poor warranty, and poor levels of prep ( tyres at 3 mill etc ) ……… then do it..... but at least do it out of a back street used car dealers, where reception is a caravan and the coffee is a 10p machine in the corner……so people know what to expect

del trotter comes to mind

id much rarer purchase from a specialist than a select car
