Considering buying one. Manual or Tip?

What are the essential options and what are the extras that will attract little return come time to sell.

Advice appreciated

hi starting with metalic paint artic silver always a favorite colour plus darks climate control,17inch alloys, leather thats all [:D]

it really is a matter of taste, budget and how your likely to use the car.

for example if your likely to do most of your driving in stop and start traffic through towns then consider tiptronic.

if your into driving top down what ever the weather then get a car with a glass back screen and get heated seats.

if you love your music while driving then get the Bose sound system upgrade.

Wind deflector is considered a must-have.
Sound pack is also a favourite (even if it's not fantastic in itself, it gives you the facility to upgrade without wrecking the car).

Are you buying new? In which case the first question is do you want the 2.7 or the S? Many journos say that while the S is probably, £ for £ the best value Porsche on sale (and possibly the best value sports car on sale at any price) it is the 2.7 that has been most improved over the last version so either way you'll have a great car. Question is, can you get £6k's worth of benefit from trading up.

For me I could never buy a sports car with an auto - I enjoy changing gear too much. Journo's may go on about millisecond shifts on the tip but for me, the joy of heel 'n toeing, blipping the throttle and flicking through the gears is worth more than the time lost because of the inadequacies of the human body!

Big alloys and a good colour are your first priority - then the must have's in my view as above are wind deflector, sound pack and climate control. Leather is always a good investment. Indeed that was the list of extras on my first 2.7. On my next one, a 3.2 I have gone for those plus the BOSE sound pack (much better than the simple Porsche upgrade which I'm not sure is even available on the new Boxster), plus sports seats (I have a narrow frame so slip about in the standard seats) and litronic headlight.

Its your car, its your dosh so get what YOU want!

Mark,
I agree with you; the very good options for a Boxster are wind deflector, climate control, and heated seats. One really excellent option is the Bose system; it makes driving with the roof down and the radio on ever more of a pleasure. A sensible colour should not be ignored if re-sale is an option in the near[ish] future.
At the end of the day, you pays your money and takes your choice.
:ROFLMAO:

Everything is down to the person buying it. If you set your budget that will give you the starting point to guide you whether you should go for an S or a 2.7. On top of the basic car, IMHO, don't choose options just because they are supposedly better at resale time. When you by a car like this you want the car that you like and you are going to enjoy for the next number of years.

You'll see by my list of options that it is an individual choice:

Colour - bright (you want to stand out)
Leather seats - only option on a 3.2 (Nothing wrong with Alcantara in a 2.7 - I had them and couldn't covince Porsche to put them in my new S)
Climate Control - yes
Upgrade sound pack - yes
Wind deflector - yes
Bigger wheels - Nothing wrong 17" on a 2.7, nothing wrong with standard 18" on the S.
Mirror and wiper options - yes

Thanks for the replies

My budget is a max £42k for a new 987. I have a dilemma whether I spec up around £38k on a 2.7 or have perhaps an underspecced S at 42k. I dont want to spend 10k on extras on a 2.7 as I would never get it back.

Is PCM a must nowadays? What about a hardtop?

With your budget I'd definitely recommend a Boxster 'S'. It comes pretty well spec'd.

6-spd manual is great. The change is slick with oodles of torque.

Hardtop and PCM are very nice but not essential.

Bose comes with wind stop thingy. Seats are a personal choice. Heated seats are, IMO, essential and you will enjoy more days with the roof down without having to shop at Millets. I also like cruise, but it is an acquired taste. Very useful on the M4.

I spent £43k on my perfect spec 987 S - metallic, leather sports seats, 19" alloys, sports steering wheel, BOSE and litronics. I'm not sure I would spec anything else even if I had a bigger budget. If you can justify the extra for the S then go for it. Make sure you drive them both. £42k will get you a lovely S and definitely not "underspecced".

Hi,

I recently bought my first Porsche - a 987, initially I couldn't justify the extra £6K for the S but ended up spending nearly £7k on extras! Colour essential - went for GT Silver which looks absolutely fantastic and is easy to keep looking good. Other extras were heated leather sports seats - def worth the money, 18" Boxter S wheels (the sales guy at OPC Hatfield convinced me that the ride quality is far smoother than the standard 17" or 19" wheels (waste of money in his view). Sports Pack - 6-speed manual box is a dream and PASM Sport mode makes an incredible difference on narrow twisting roads, Sports Chrono Pack - prob not worth it but the dashboard clock looks the business, wind deflector - essential, sound pack - you get 7 speakers for a modest outlay and it sounds pretty good if you like your tunes - I don't know how you can justify >£1K on the BOSE if you are planning on top down driving - just listen to the engine man! The demo I drove had the PCM module but it kept distracting me and I def would not recommend.

No regrets about not opting for the 'S', the performance and handling are better than I ever imagined, previous car was a Beemer 3-Series Coupe but the 987 is in a different league - ENJOY!
