Back home again after a lovely break, shame the Boxster couldn't make it all the way around[&o]

It was so nice to meet old and new friends, many thanks to Peter Kirton for driving me in his car at Fort William and Skye.

I hope that I don't have to have a new set of tappets every 6000 miles![&:]

Looking forward to the "repatriation" ceremony later in the week, hope the car survives the journey down from Glasgow.

Finally, once again, congratulations to Iain for giving us yet another fantastic tour[:D]

So you got back home OK. What "Porsche Assist" loan car did you finally end up with? I guess it was some sort of MB.

I can volunteer to drive it down from Glasgow to ensure its safe passage south.

I ended up with a C Class Mercedes oil burner automatic which goes pretty well and returned 47 mpg, try getting that out of a Boxster! [;)]

I'll have to think about your offer, I've seen how fast you drive[:-]

Glad you and Janet made it back Stephen.

We got back ourselves about 3 hours ago.

Great event as always Iain [8D]

C'mon then tell us what happened!

John, the first indication that there was something wrong, was the emission warning light and a message to "check engine, visit workshop".

The tick-over was slightly uneven, but performance seemed normal.

After waiting at some temporary traffic lights for some time, the tick-over became very uneven and when I pulled away the engine was very rough. Felt like it was not running on all cylinders.

When I got to the hotel at Fort William, I contacted Porsche Assistance. The RAC guy diagnosed a miss-fire on number 3 cylinder and arranged for the car to be uplifted to Porsche Glasgow.

Glasgow tested the plugs and coil which were OK and asked my permission to carry out mechanical testing and number three cylinder failed a compression test.

I was told that the problem was due to a worn tappet, which after only 6000 miles seemed odd.

Subsequently, I was told that there was a problem with the tappet material and all the tappets were going to be replaced.

That's the story so far, I am hoping to have the car back by the end of this week and am riding around in a Mercedes C Class which I collected in Glasgow, having initially been given a Vauxhall Vectra as nothing else was available at Enterprise Inverness.

Bummer!

How are you going to get it back down -Do Porche Assist return it to you or do you need to bring Hire car back up and take Boxster back down?

Often wondered how these thing resolve themselves when car breaks down at wrong end of (or even different) country

As I understand it, the car will be "repatriated" to Bristol.

I may get them to deliver it to my local OPC which is 5 miles up the road from me, so that I can inspect it and discuss the matter with them.

I guess I can leave the loan car there after letting Enterprise know where they can collect it.

Just had a call from Porsche Glasgow.

The car is back together again, complete with a full set of new tappets.

They will take it on an extended road test tonight and provided all is normal, it will be transported to Porsche Bristol on Wednesday, so I should be reunited with my Boxster on Thursday[:D]

Keeping everything crossed!

So glad to learn that you will soon be reunited with your Boxster, Stephen. As we blew a tyre on last year's run, we understand only too well how disappointing it can be to be left behind. We hope the new tappets solve the problem.

Many thanks once again, Iain, for another great event. If you can guarantee a week of sunny skies and high temperatures every year we will never miss one!

I have put a few of my photos on Photobucket as a slideshow. If you would like to see them then click here.

Good news Stephen on your soon to be returned Boxster. Bet your looking forward to the repatriation ceremony.
Thanks again Iian on another great tour.

Blimey you could not asked for better weather

The photos are like a visit Scotland advert!

I am now reunited with my Boxster[:D]

However, when the car was offloaded from the transporter here in Bristol, the front underside got scraped[]

It hardly shows but it will have to go into the body shop for a bit of TLC[X(]

Just as well I have the extended warranty, the guy at Bristol OPC reckoned it would have cost me over £2k plus the cost of a hire car. As you said in your email Phil, yet another problem that Porsche won't admit to[:-]

One thing I noticed straight away, was the absence of the tick, tick, tick on tick-over, which I am fairly sure had always been there. I thought it was normal. Guess the tappet was faulty right from the beginning. Amazing how these things get ignored!

Thanks for everyone's good wishes, here's to the next time[;)]

As numerous Boxter owners go outside now and start cars up and listen for ticking noise

Good to hear you enjoyed your visit up here

Just dont tell too many folk about the wonderfully quiet driving roads

Glad the car is back (almost) as it should be.

I had a set replaced on mine - i just happened to mention the ticking noise during an OPC visit - covered under factory warranty at 18 months old; that was enough to convince me to extend the warranty when the time came.
