Boxster bicycle rack

Anyone any advice or information about a rack to carry a bicycle on a Boxster?(stop rolling your eyes, you purists out there!)

Usually find the Porsche Roof Transport Systems on ebay now and then, around £100 second hand

Roof Transport System is only for 986 series cars - there is no equivalent for 987s.

There are racks that attach to the rear of the car in a sort of towbar way. This one is by BirdAutomotive apparently

I have a roof transport system available for sale. It consists of 2 side frames and 2 "ladder" rack bars plus fittings. It is suitable only for the 986. The body fittings were not built into the 987. Fitting the system is a bit fiddly but it does work well. Obviously the hood cant be operated when it is on. Well it can but the results are pretty disasterous! To carry bikes additional fittings are required but these are readily availble from Halfords etc. I did a trip from Scotland to France and it worked well.

I understood from the Porsche literature on this that the roof COULD be operated with the RTS in place???

I must admit I didn't ever try to operate the roof with the rack in situ. The clearance from roof (closed) to underside of the rack is about 30/40 mm. It always seemed to me that the roof "climbed" more than that during opening / closing. I didn't ever feel brave enough to put it to the test and in any case the wind noise with bikes on top, even with the roof closed, is very high. I no longer have the car so can't check it out factually.

I have sourced a boot lid mounted bike rack from the Netherlands, although I haven't ordered one as yet. Here is the text of the email I received in reply to my enquiry:

As soon as I locate the proper site, I'll let you know. Otherwise, email Ruy for more details.

Lets hope you get away with the import duty and VAT, otherwise its a rather expensive bike rack with todays exchange rate !
