Boxster : Convertible roof Questions

Hi All,
I am new to Porsche ownership and have just obtained a Boxster S (year 2000). Anyhow I have a number of questions concerning the roof. If there are owners who can help me then it would be much appreciated !.

Questions
1) I have a blue roof, on which I seem to have two faint white marks on both sides of the roof ?. These are symetrical, eg in the same place on both sides of the roof. Has anyone any idea of what causes this ? or has anyone else seen the same marks ?. maybe this has been caused by the roof closing mechanisim ?.

I have recently cleaned the roof with Auto Glym and rinsed the roof (several times) and then I re-proffed the roof with Auto Glym and also re-proffed it again with the Porsche roof proffer. Could this have any effect ?.2) Is it possible to get some kind of colour touch up kit for the roof ?. If someone can recomend one then that would be good. Ideally I would not want to treat the whole of the roof, just a couple of places.

3) I have a new rear plastic window in the roof. However I want to clean it. I have got the official Porsche window polish, but is there some other cleaner that I need to get for the window, before I polish it ?. My local OPC in Swindon, have not been very informative so far.

Welcome Baza [:D]

Re the marks - yes its rubbing marks when the lid is down ,, they can be cleaned out

Re cleaning have a read of this current thread

Re the rear window .. for the plastic one you have do a search on hindsight on the forums

Or consider a Glass rear window swop out

Hope that helps (PS join the club [;)] )

Hi,
Thanks for the fast reply and the welcome. I am glad you state that I should be able to get the marks out of my roof, since they are caused by rubbing when the lid is down.

The trouble is that I am not sure of the best way to get the marks out ?. Prior to your reply I had followed a link about cleaning the hood. I have cleaned the roof with Auto Glym recently in the last couple of weeks. This generally tidied up the hood (but the marks are still there). I have since re-proofed the roof as well with the Auto Glym product and the official Porsche re-proofer.

I have heard that you should not clean the roof to oftern as you will damage the cloth. So I am not sure what to do next ?. I could I suspose try and clean just the areas where the white marks are, to try and get rid of them and then re-proof. The other option I guess would be to consider some kind of hood restore ?. Ideally I would like to try and get some kind of official Porsche roof touch up kit, if there is such a thing ?. I am worried about getting a good colour match (eg Porsche blue hood). The other thing I might try that I have read on the forum is that bottled carbonated water is good for removing stains/marks eg bird droppings so I was wondering if this might be worth a try as well ?.

What would you do ?

The other obvious thing is that if the marks are caused by rubbing when the roof is down, should the roof mechanism be adjusted ?, or is this something that happens over a long period of time, and since may car is seven years old, it has these faint white marks. If possible I would like to remove them.

As for the rear window, I will try the Porsche centre again to see if they can provide a pre-cleaner, prior to using the rear window polish. Since my rear window is virtually new I will stick with it for the time being. But I must admit glass would be a whole lot less hasstle.

Thanks for all the help

unfortunately the rub marks are a downside (the only one?!) of owning a boxster. All 986's appear to be a victim of this and I suppose the more you drop the roof the more wear you are likely to get.

Does this issue occur with 987's also?

Hindsight 0131 346 2488 cost approx £42 is good stuff for realy milky smeared plastic screens ,a word of warning it is hard work to apply and take off but it does work, you will be left with too much so try as I did sell the remainder on to some one else with the same problem .

All Boxsters have these two circles see Jack In The Box post on cleaning the hood

Hi,
Thanks for the advice concerning the rear screen and the use of hindsight at £42. However after talking to a guy from the Swindon OPC working in parts, and who apparently used to do Porsche vallet, he suggested of all things, Mr sheen !, recons it better than the official Porsche Polish which I have in any case, says it easier to apply and remove and the results are as good or better. So I was going to give this a try on a small section of the screen as a test.

I must admit when he said Mr sheen, I had to check the date, in case it was April 1st.
