Boxster cylinder liners

I have a 2005 Boxster S 3.2. My local independent has told me that from 2005-9 Porsche used alloy cylinder liners in these cars which are prone to cracking and then need a total engine rebuild. Does anyone know about this phenomenon and how I can check if my car affected?

Andrew,

The topic of cylinder bore scoring and also the so-called D-chunk bore failures have been discussed endlessly on various forums over the years as well as rear main seal (RMS) and intermediate shaft (IMS) bearing failures. Just try Google-ing the subjects if you want to put yourself off Porsche ownership for life..!

For a more balanced view, you may want to take a look at this:[ http://www.porscheinspections.com/qanda.php#Cylinder%20bore%20scoring ]. FYI Peter Morgan is a well respected expert and author on all things Porsche.

Apart from stripping the engine, the best way to examine the bores is to conduct a borescope check.

A couple of years ago there were a series of entries written by Baz Hart concerning this topic on this forum and I think it was in the 997 section. Try searching under various titles around the bore scoring theme.

Barrie founded Hartech over 20 years ago.

I did a search for bazhart apparently this was an ongoing concern for Hartech as early as 2010 below is a link to one of the topics.
