boxster engine re-build

Hi there,

I know that there is definitive mileage for an engine re-build but can anyone give me a rough idea as to how long a standard 2.5 will last before a re-build is required? I'm looking at the cheaper end of the market and want to try and avoid any (very) expensive surprises!

(a) How long is a piece of string?

(b) I don't think there is a cheaper end of the market for rebuilding modern Porsche engines particularly if you wish to avoid surprises.

Porsche extended warranty stops at 9 years or 100,000 miles I think which may be an indicator.

I think that's absolutely right. The old air-cooled engines were more predictable and most needed a top end rebuild at 80-100,000 miles (guides, valves and rings) but I don't think it is common for the water cooled engines - you certainly don't see any postings on this forum to suggest it.

I have heard of a few high-mile 996's (100,000+ miles) that have been trouble-free, and you will see a lot of references to the fact that they seem to use less oil as they get older. Sure, there have been some failures, but it's my understanding that these have generally been with lower mileage cars, and I think this is the 'luck of the draw' situation with the build components.

I bought mine with 50,000 miles on the clock, and I would be happy to buy another with similar or higher mileage. I'd probably be more wary buying something with ultra-low miles unless it had a bl**dy good guarantee.

Hmmm not sure I agree with this. My Box now has 86k miles and I've had no problems with it whatsoever. In fact the friendly guys at Ninemeister say that it is the older low mileage cars that tend to get the expensive repair bills, not the well used higher mileage cars. Same goes for the 911's too in their opinion.

Obviously luck of the draw comes in to it too! But I think its wrong to assume cars over 75k will be more expensive to run than those under 75k miles.

Just my tuppance worth.
 
you could be right had a replacement engine last month at 36000 miles,full service history ( 1997 2.5) went rattle, rattle bang at Bedford Track Day.
Porsche have apparently just put the price up by £2000.00 for a replacement unit, ( Northway managed to locate a 2nd hand one ) as other wise not worth repairing ?

no - i'm its 3rd owner, the majority of the miles were done by the previous owner - he bought it from a dealer 8 months after its first owner returned it.....for whatever reason.

When i bought the car (2 years ago) i had planned to get one with fairly low mileage, but after seeing mine, i was unable to find anything as clean even with lower mileage - it was very odd!

Its always been serviced / had work completed by the OPC and now doesn't do over 7K a year.....I'm lucky if it get's used more than twice a week and as such its the biggest waste of money for me.......but i wouldn't have it any other way!
