Boxster engine replacement / modification.

Hi everyone. I've got a 2000 2.7 Boxster that i've had for two years. I was thinking of changing it for a 993 or a 996 S or T plate some time later this year. I am in two minds now as i've heard that a 996 3.6 litre engine will fit with little modification.I would also look at the suspension and brakes. I just fancy something a little diffrent. Have any of you heard of this or can point me in the right direction for some advice.

Probably no more than anyone of what is involved.

Hi,

The Autofarm silsleeve conversion sounds very interesting to me, they could take your damaged or perfectly sound engine and rebuild / modify it to a larger size more power with all the oil seals, liner cracking problems sorted.

But what really caught my imagination was 300bhp with the original engine numbers of the engine , so if anything happened and your insurance company had to pay out they would be none the wiser.

After all the biggest problem with using a 996 engine is you would have to declare the car as a "special" or "modified" to your insurance company and they would insist on an engineers report and charge you a fortune to cover it.

There was an article on the 3.4 conversion in 911 & porsche world a while back you may be able to search it somehow.
The 3.4 from memory goesin ok but I have a vague recolection that it was not so simple for the 3.6 cant remember why.
Autofarm can take the 3.4 motor out to 4.0 but not sure how far they can take the 2.7 motor, it's the same block I think so should be possible, your talking around the 8k mark though.
What you really want is a nice GT3 motor in it [;)]
How about the turbo route ?

Pre-MOST wiring cars can go to 3.4 relatively easily (swap the ecu, and use the 996 instruments)
Post-MOST wiring cars can use the 3.6 (again - ecu and instruments from a 996)

We do have a member who had a 996 engine put in the Boxster and he retained the Boxster instruments - he had a lot of issues before it was sorted. (I'm not saying it was JUST the instruments that caused the problems!)

Thanks Rob,
I have emailed autofarm with my original question. The reply i have included below. I haven't explored the prospect of 300bhp out of the existing engine. I think that this may be a good option. I shall find out the costings.

We've installed 3.4 engines before, see Dec 2001 911 & Porsche World.
To fit a 3.4 996 engine, which needs new special exhaust system and lots of other detail bits, parts and labour circa £3,000 + VAT[FONT=verdana, geneva"]If we'd everything to hand, should be able to do it in 2 weeks.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Installing a 3.6 engine is much the same process, except the throttle control is electronic. You'd hence need the pedal assembly out of a late Boxster as well, I'd guess add another £1,000 + VAT parts and labour for a 3.6 installation.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]We've a 3.6 engine in stock needing a rebuild, but no good used units, which fetch circa £4,000. Our unit fully rebuilt would be some £7,500 + VAT.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Unfortunately the 2.7 ltr engines have little value, and we could only make a nominal allowance against it.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]We would need to investigate your brake enquiry further, but I'm sure there is a bolt-on upgrade available.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Hope this helps. Let me know if you'd like to investigate this further.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Best regards[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Josh Sadler Autofarm[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

Matt, I have seen GT3 motors around the 10 - 12k mark, dont know what else you would need to make it work
