boxster engine whine

Difficult to diagnose from your undetailed description but it could just be a noisy alternator or some other item driven by the polybelt on the front of the engine (water pump, power steering pump, air conditioning compressor and pulleys). See here:

I asked the local Porsche centre to investigate, the poly rib belt had fairly recently been replaced but they replaced various bearings on pulleys supporting the belt which were found to be noisy. There was no significant improvement so they suggested replacing the alternator, again with no improvement.
They assured me there was nothing to worry about but I was irritated by the whine and eventually sold the car. I forget exactly how much I spent changing various parts but it was I think around £2000.
I'd have been better off turning the stereo up louder !
