Boxster Gear Shift?

Hi Guys, all comments will be welcomed. I test drove a boxster today 2.7L manual 2003 with only 20K from a national dealer (not porsche).
loved the car but for the life of me had trouble finding the gears. Unlike every car i have ever driven the gear stick did not fall to the right when put in netural, is this normal behaviour for a porsche boxster gear stick finding 1st was hard and also from 2nd to 3rd as i had to move the stick over to find 3rd gear?
They also has a 2005 'boxster s' this had 54k and the gear shift felt the same???

please let me know if this sounds normal, Thanks[&:]

I sometimes have trouble getting 2nd on my 2004 986 - but only when cold. Sounds like yours is worse though - time for a tweak.

No, that doesn't sound right to me.

As Chris says, I find the first few changes from 1st to 2nd when cold to be a little baulky, but everything else is fine, and when warm it's perfectly normal.

Was it a 5 or 6 speed? (the S would be a 6). I haven't really any experience with a 5 speed Boxster I have to admit...

no it was just a standard boxster, excuse the expression but you can normally waggle a gear stick in netural.
The car in questions gear stick seemed to stay centralised when put in netural so from 2nd-3rd rather than a slick up and across, i was pushing up, pulling right and then struggling to find the up of 3rd?

It was very cold today the dealer has had the car for 5/6 weeks and has laid idle i'm guessing over xmas so i was probably the first to test drive over such a long cold spell they even needed to fit a new batery before i could test drive

dose anyone think it could just be the cold weather or could this be a potential problem?

Hi,

I have a 2004 2.7 986 Boxster and if im honest when cold the gear selection is rather stiff to say the least? once its up to running temp its a lot better but not as slick as most daily ride gear boxes its something ive got used to now? if your concenrned take it to a Porsche Mech head and he will check the linkages etc to make sure all is well.

I've had a Boxster S with the 6 speed box and of course my Cayman S also has this, in both cases the gear changes have been light and slick in all conditions with the exception of in the change down to 2nd at a roundabout near my home when cold both could baulk at the engagement point.

The stick on both normally centers in neutral between 3rd & 4th and has to be moved sideways for the other gears.

If unsure about these cars gear changes try a car at an OPC and discuss with the salesman there, it is possible that this other dealer has two cars with defects.

Just to clarify the 986 and 987 gear selector feel are very different. For the 986 platform both the 5 and 6 speed box feel very stiff when cold more so if the car is subsequently fitted with the short shift kit. The 987 is a totally different feel, indeed it really needs the short shift kit to make the selector feel more positive.

Thanks everyone for the comments, to be honest i think its more the case of getting used to the cars gears and position of them as a few of you have pointed out,
i will though just take a look at another car somewhere else just to put my mind at ease that this is how a '04 boxster' gears feel

Yes I think its a matter of just getting used to a Porsche gearbox.
Never had any probs with my 986 or 987 gear selection either cold or hot
On a really extreme cold morning minus degrees it may feel just a tad tighter
but nothing really to be honest.
But my Boxsters are used every day so may make a difference.
