10/12/04 *** UPDATED INFO Boxster Coupe GTS, scheduled for 2006.

The coupe version of Porsche's entry-level Boxster roadster is set for launch next year as the Boxster GTS, but the German automaker is already considering a lightweight Clubsport version of the fixed-roof sports car. Tentatively planned for 2006, the stripped two-door Boxster GTS Clubsport (without air conditioning, audio system and sound deadening) may serve as the basis for an extension of Porsche's motorsport activities, say sources in Zuffenhausen.

Other changes include a more free-flowing exhaust to sharpen throttle response, a higher redline, and a lower final-drive ratio for improved off-the-line acceleration. Suspension changes have already netted lateral acceleration figures of up to 1.2 g, says our Porsche source.

Autocar persist with this story, despite denials from Porsche. Do you think they actually know something, or are they just guessing?

Also, the name Boxster GTS keeps cropping up, is this likely to be the real name? If so, it shows a staggering lack of imagination on Porsche's part. They seem to delight in using just a handful of the same names over and over again ... witness the supercar Carrera GT while at the same time they officially name the new 911 (997) the Carrera! Confusing or what?

Boxster originally derived from Boxer and Roadster, so if the new car is going to be a coupe, retaining the Boxster name makes no logical sense. They should do what they did with the Cayenne, and come up with a totally new name to establish this as a new line of car. We've had B (Boxster) and C (Cayenne and Carrera) so how about a name beginning with D.

Porsche Daytona anyone?

Perhaps they want a new Chilli naming convention.
After the Cayenne, we could have Jalapeno for the entry level and Habanero for top model.

Alternatively you could have Coupster.

However, you have to go some to beat Nissan, with names like the Cedric.

I think they are reporting officially leaked secret nod nod wink wink info[:D]

The whole point should be to make the Clubsport cheaper than the standard model as they did with the 968 - to price it at a premium to the boggo car would be an own goal.
