Has anyone used one of the after market induction kits on the Boxster?I would like to increase the aural quality of the engine at a reasonal price having fitted a sports exhaust.I had read that the maf sensore can be affected. Is this the case by anyone who has fitted one? What would be the fitting cost and where did you get it done?Does it increase the induction noise as they are supposed to do?

Tony,

K&N Filters can increase the Aural Quality of the induction - although there have been many reports that show no actual peformance gains...
Removing the Foam from the OEM filter also helps the sound experience in a similar way.
MAF Sensors used to get clogged/oiled up by installations of K&N (or other "oiled" filters) if they were over-oiled. Wrapping a newly oiled filter in a towel overnight is said to help mop up any excess (and then put the towel back in the airing cupboard - no-one will know...)
Revised MAF design has alledgely reduced the problem on later cars.

Other routes exist - including "de-snork" mods which removes the trunking leading up to the filter box. Makes noise but again unlikely to increase performance (the opposite is probably true[8|])
Removing airbox altogether and using direct-drawn air just means you are using hot air from around the engine (rather than cooled from outside) so reducing performance even more...

Complete replacement systems MIGHT have benefits - only a rolling road knows for sure... but these cost a lot more. I have not seen any actual factual gains demonstrated, but that may be because I mostly hang out here now[;)]

All the above will probably affect warranty. Some OPC's have said K&N not a problem, others just say "no" (and make a mental note that you have asked no-doubt[>:])

Any actual real genuin performance enhancing mods (should you ever find one!) should be advised to you Insurance company. They will no-doubt say well done and present you with thier revised premium forthwith...

Thanks Mark
I agree with all tour points but was thinking more of theEvo induction kit or similar which use smoother trunking and different filter but use cold air

To add to Mark's comments, if your looking for better noise for minimal bucks
1) Remove the snorkel - cost £0.00
2) If that doesn't do the job for you get a K&N - cost circa £40.00
Neither will give you a noticeable performance increase, but the extra induction noise will put a (very cost effective) smile on your face.

I am be very suspicious of the performance gains claimed for the Evo type systems. Suggest that for similar money some advanced driver training might be a better investment (not saying your not a good driver Tony) as this is at least portable between different cars.

Anyone used ITG filters ??. They provide filters for F1 & I have used them on a Impreza and A4 1.8t and found them to be very good?. They also made me a filter for my Bike after sending them the old filter housing.

Some OPC's have said K&N not a problem, others just say "no"

i.e. Some say it is not a problem, and have actually fitted it for members, others say it invalidates warranty for the induction system (a pretty big part of the engine!), and refuse to fit.
