Porsche's junior Boxster is go! Boss Matthias Müller confirmed that the small, mid-engined roadster is at an advanced stage of development at the firm's research and development facility in Weissach.

Billed as a spiritual successor to the classic Porsche 356, the model is based on the Volkswagen Group's new MMB platform - which will also underpin the VW Bluesport, tipped for launch in 2013.

Full sized design prototypes have already been built, and the firm is currently evaluating the business case for the new car which sources have told Auto Express could appear as early as 2012.

"We have a model based on the Bluesport, but we are not yet ready to show it."

"When we are convinced about the project, we will be ready to show it" said Müller.

"However, we do not have to show this car off as a concept to make a decision on its future."

"We have all the facts and figures we need. The first time you see it, it will be as a production ready car."

"At the moment, we are working through hundreds of new ideas from our engineers, ideas that will take the company through the next ten years."

"Before we do anything, we must work out what to do first."

However, among these ideas, Müller also revealed the following projects were currently under development:

Flat-four engine for Boxster and Cayman

A new flat four-cylinder engine is being developed by Porsche to power the next generation of Boxster and Cayman models.

The engine, which will be developed from the firm's existing flat-six cylinder unit, is just one of a range of more fuel efficient, less polluting engines under development at the firm.

Both naturally aspirated and turbocharged versions of the 2.4-litre engine are being considered.

Stunning ..should have used this design on the next Boxster
The rear louvers are great looking

History is an interesting thing. Once upon a time in land far far away there was project car and lo it was called the Boxster. It met universal acclaim when shown off at the motorshow and thus people cried ...make it you must. But Porsche said ! we can't build it like it is. It's too small ! It wont pass crash testing with such small overhangs ! People won't want such an impractical car !
Speed forward to the present day and lo and behold ............Ta da.

Yes Laurence but the original prototype (still to be found in the Stuttgart Museum) does not look to much like what everyone was expecting when the Boxsters started to roll off the production line![:-]

flat 4 turbo....lets hope it doesn't end up sounding like a subaru...the other flat 4 turbo.
as 4-pots go, the subaru sounds great

Subaru sounds different ...but not great IMHO. Most seem to end up sounding like an old tug boat , especially after a "performance " exhaust has been fitted. Given the choice I'd have a 6 cylinder rather than 4 pot any day. The only good sounding 4 pot is the honda Vtec , ....that sounds like a racing car on high cam.

At the moment , most people can differentiate a porsche sports car by the flat six sound , once its got the same engine layout as a subaru , I think it will lose some of its individuality. The engine note was certainly one of things that attracted me to the boxster over the competition. I hope the baby boxster has some sound tuning to keep an individual and purposeful sound without sounding out of character.
