boxster knocking/tapping

Hi everyone I'm new to the forum and after a little info on my missis's 1997 2.5 boxster. She got back from work last night and said the car as just started making a noise, i had a listen to it and it was making a loud knocking/tapping noise, sometimes when idling it will stop but when revving the engine it comes back and gets louder. I put the car on the drive and i asked my next door neighbour to look at it today as he's been a mechanic for the last 20 years, he took the belt off to make sure it wasn't the water pump or anything there but still made the noise, with the panel off from behind the seats the noise sounds like its coming from the right side of the engine, he thinks it could be a hydraulic lifter. So he put a engine flush in left it idling for 30 mins drained the oil took the oil filter out checked the filter for any metal and there was nothing, filled it back up with 5/40 oil and new oil filter started it up left it running for a hour but still the same! Is there anything else that can go wrong making this noise? Also he thinks the engine might have to come out to change the lifters will he have to do this or is it possible to change them without dropping the engine?
Cheers
Ricky

It sounds to me Ricky that your mechanic's diagnosis is probably about right for a car with that mileage.

I have a feeling that it may be possible to change the valve lifters in-situ but you'd be best contacting a PC or reputable Indy to confirm this before embarking on the job. No doubt it would be much easier with the engine out though.

Hope you get it fixed soon.

Seek expert advise from your local favoured Porsche indy or contact:

Just to add, having had the poly-belt off, I presume that you've discounted something working loose and touching a rotating part.

Has your mechanic checked to ensure that all the sparking plugs are tight? [Richard H's chirping/tapping noise perhaps?].

Hi just to let everyone know this youtube clip is identical to the sound my engine was making...http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q6JQA3n6LLQ

my mate took the cams off and lifters out the engine today, he said the lifters look ok none was soft to press he had to use a big pair of pliers to try and squash the lifters, i don't know if this is normal because i didn't have enough time to talk to him been out all day, is that right should they be like that? Im interested if something was blocked and a lifter couldn't get oil would it make this noise???

Spoke to him he said everything looks fine in the head, valve springs etc etc so i ordered a new set of lifters will take a few days to arrive so hopefully when they turn up he'll spend a few hours putting it back together and all will be well, hopefully.... :)

Sounds like a sensible precaution to take now that it's stripped down Ricky.

If the knock goes away that will be a result. If not, you'll need to look elsewhere which could unfortunately mean an engine strip to find the cause. Fingers crossed..!

By the way, was it necessary to drop the engine to remove the tappets?

Jeff

Hi Jeff, well i'll find out tomorrow the lifters came today so he'll be fitting them sometime time tomorrow so hoping for good news...no he didn't need to remove the engine.
Ricky

Gutted, bad news its still the same so thats the cheaper option done now on to the expensive option! so if its not the lifters the sound must be coming from the bottom end, so do i send it in and spend i dont know how many thousands on having the engine stripped and rebuilt, or do i buy a 2nd hand engine and pay my mate to fit it...?

Really sorry to hear that Ricky.

Personally, I think that I'd go for a rebuild rather than a second-hand engine where you never know what you're buying. If you've just run a bearing and there's no other damage, it may not be as expensive a repair as you fear.

As Geoff has said, Hartech are an established and well-respected Porsche engine rebuild company who offer a number of alternatives through to a complete engine rebuild. Certainly worth speaking to them, although there are many others.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Jeff
