Boxster n00b

Hi I am thinking of getting a 2nd hand Boxster - budget 20-22 K.

I currently own a 91' 944 S2 and an old Golf.

What is better - a low mileage vanilla or a more used 'S' ?
Is there anything I should be aware of before purchasing- cambelt etc?

Is there a year I should avoid and a mileage that is dangerous?

A well looked after high milage anything will be better than a low milage poodle used by some old duffer for the occasional trip out to the bridge club! Don't underestimate the vanilla model either - I would suggest for 22k you go for the best and newest 2.7 you can find as a 22k Boxster S is still a rare beast, and may not be the best example.

The 48k service is a biggie requiring the usual major service plus spark plugs, belt change and the like so make sure you have seen the receipts for that or account for £1000 at the OPC to get it done. Make sure there is plenty of life in the tyres (£800 for a set), brakes and clutch.

Apart from the basic used car rules, check the RMS issue as you can read anywhere on this site. You can pay the OPC £700 for a used warranty though you'd need to maintain the OPC servicing to keep it valid.

So in summary, if you can find a well looked after 2.7 with big alloys, leather, climate, sound upgrade and a lovely metallic colour, you'll be a very happy bunny.

Actually the 48k service at an OPC is only around £520 and 4 new tyres (assuming 17inch upgrade) £420 or less for 4.
Happy shopping!

Cheers for the advice chaps.

It seems the key is getting a car with a good history and saleable options.
What is the mpg like in town driving?

I know alot of people say this - but this is the best looked after posrche around, its used as my 3 rd car, it onlly ever ben dry summer used, 1 previous owner, because it does so little mileage, i have had the yearly porsche servicing done.
It is now coming to 23500 miles. I have all the lights upgraded. It is always garaged and i clean it personally every sunday morning.
It is as new inside out, not a scratch on body, alloys or interior ( the leather is not even cracked yet!) and its still as 'tight' as when it left the factory.
And it has never had an RMS leak - full inspection welcome!! Ramp aswell , its bone dry! Its my pride!!! good home wanted!

Duncan!

Good to hear from you! I thought you had a 944 turbo that the Doctor was trying to buy off you! Urban myths I guess.
Come over sometime, I have a Boxster and plenty of advice if you're looking for it.
Get my number off Hari.

See you soon mate!

It is worth trying to find a 2.7, and a slight stretch of budget (c.£23k) should get you a really nice example (low mileage, FPSH, high spec, immaculate condition etc).

The Boxster 3.2 'S' is truly superb, and a serious alternative to the 911, but the best cars start nearer £25k.

Best buys will be private sales, but obviously you'll need to be very careful.

I heard you had a 996 C2...but that was from the Doctor!

Will be in touch.

Sounds interesting but I am not going to be purchasing until another couple of months.

I want to check out the Nissan 350Z before I commit to buying a Boxster. My personal experience of owning a Porsche is that they are very rewarding and the build quality translates to lower-than-expected servicing costs. Also the reviews of the Boxster speak for themselves.

Yeah you cant compare the badges...

..but I like to check out the competition regardless of what I am buying

No Probs, i wasnt looking to sell it till around april, let me know nearer the time if you are interested, but from my past exp, prices go up when the sun comes out , but i have a 'true' car and a true seller, so will keep the price regardless of the sun! , p.s. had a look at the 350 z, nice car , nice drive, good performance, just cudnt hack the badge!!! how shallow am i !!!!!
