Boxster PDA Mount

Hi all,[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Hoping someone can help. As a new Boxster owner I'm looking at fitting my PDA for Sat/Nav purposes. Can anyone recommend a PDA Holder/Mount ? I've been looking at the Boxster specific Brodit ProClip (item - 652428) and associated mount, but am reserved to stick anything to the upholstery, does anyone else use one of these ?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Many thanks in advance[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Dickster[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

In actual fact you don't have to stick it to anything.

(Speaking for the new 987 mount), the fit is sufficiently snug to work without having to use the sticky tabs. I had the same thoughts.

Saying that, the sticky tabs are only quite small anyway and the area that they might leave a mark (if ever you removed it) would be quite small.

I wouldn't hesitate to recommend one even if you don't 'stick' it to the centre console.

Cheers thboxster,[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]That's good to hear. I have contacted them to see if I could glean more info regarding the 'self-adhesive' pads but as yet no joy.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]But will order one anyway, seems to be worth a chance and the reviews of others are also favourable.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Just out of interest can you recall where yours was purchased from ? and as a newbie, how do I get my info upgraded to state 'PCGB Member' as I am one ?[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Thanks again,[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Dickster[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I actually got mine from the UK importer and distributor (Nemesis), but that was because the product (at the time) hadn't been tested on a UK vehicle and subsequently wasn't for general sale. I did the testing and wrote the feedback for it so I got one early.

Personally i'd go to somewhere like here:

http://www.dsldevelopments.com/brodit/ProClip/Porsche+Boxster-Brodit-ProClip.asp

as it's easy to find the product on the web site.

The photo attached shows the rear sticky pad to give you some idea of the size. (It's the yellow bit)

Just had another thought, the 987 mount is generic to fit 987 and 997 so maybe a group buy with the 997 forum might be in order.

thboxster,[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]I was actually looking at your recommended site yesterday, so will place an order today, as it's needed soon.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]As for 'group buy' I'm actually after one for a 986 - so I'll have to pass.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Thanks again for info and everyone who's read post - I look forward to participating in the future.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"][:)][:)][FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Cool.[FONT=verdana, geneva"] [FONT=verdana, geneva"]Dickster[FONT=verdana, geneva"]

I don't know if they would fit the 987/997, but dashmount.co.uk do a similar thing trimmed in leather. Here's mine with a phone mount attached:

I've got the Brodit one -it has two double sided sticky pads, one on the rear that attaches to the side of the centre console side piece, and the other that sticks to the front face of the same part. As i have full leather i didnt use either sticky pad at first, but found that the mout did slip slightly unless i used the pad at the front - it seems to be just sticky enough to secure itself, but easy to remove if needbe.

The part of the clip that wraps around the front of the console is supposed to be long enough to slide down the side of the air con control panel - i couldn't do this, the plastic 'tab' only just reaches the panel, and the panel is so tight to the leather trimmed side panel that i couldn't get the tab down the gap if it was long enough. Perhaps i got a bad one, and thats why i need to use the sticky pad at the front ?

Always do a trial fit first, if you place it too high the glovebox lid catches the Brodit clip when opened.

I bought mine through handnav.co.uk - they are not the quickest for delivery unless you pay extra for next day. I also bought the Brodit docking cradle for the PDA with NavmanGPS sleeve, this uses the original PDA power cable into its base, but they have options which are wired directly into the holder. I wish i'd gone with the latter as its a pain transfering the power cable and the pda unit to another car. I'd rather hve the hard wired cradle and the power cable free to use in the other car without unplugging.

And the observant ones will notice thats ToTom5 running on a Navman sleeve, TT5 is so much better than the early Navman system i used previosuly

Does the GPS antenna work OK down there? I was looking to put my TT One lower down the centre console (covering the CD holders) but gave up the idea as I thought an external antenna would be a bit of a pain.

The antenna on the Navman sleeve doesn't work with the tomtom software wherever its placed !

The communication speed used in TT5 is too high for the sleeve to respond on is own antenna - i have a separate Holux antenna plugged into the side of the gps sleeve so TT5 basically uses this rather than the built in one (the antenna itself is placed on top of the dash). If i had a more recent gps sleeve, i think it'd work fine down there.

I know TTOne users with the 986, using a Brodt clip in a similar position, don't have to resort to an additional aerial so i think you'd be OK. However the Brodit clip in that position on the 996/986 prevents use od the cigarette lighter socket when TTOne is mounted directly onto the clip. The best thin i found when i had the 986 was a £5 vent clip from ebay, that hooked into the central air vents with a 'foot' that rested against the cupholder plate (but meant i couldn't use the cupholders that i'd never use anyway !)

Just curious, and interested in GPS mounts. If you dont use the GPS in the sleeve, why do you use the sleeve at all..? (I have the Navman sleeve and the sensitivity is so poor compared to the newer SiRF units that I dont use it anymore either..!).

I use Brodit mounts in my other cars and they are great, I'd prefer a mount that was higher-up in the Porsche though.

cheers

simon

The sleeve still houses the CF card with the maps on and has the cnnection for the additional antenna. IF i was starting over again now with a pda system i'd just have the pda with bluetooth, which will fit in the same mount, and a bluetooth gps receiver on the dash somewhere. Then again i use the pda as a palmtop PC so infreqently a TomTomOne would suffice,
