Porsche's electric Boxster E trials begin
Three all-electric Porsche Boxster E test cars begin road trials in Germany.
Porsche is boxing clever with the roll-out of its electric powered Boxster. The firm has built three cars described as "rolling laboratories" which feature all-electric powertrains in place of the traditional flat-six petrol engine.
Details of the exact configuration of the car's power sources are yet to be confirmed by Porsche, but the firm has said that the cars feature either one or two electric motors sourced from its VW parent, developing 180 kW (241bhp). The batteries are mid-mounted and have a 29 kw/h capacity.
Performance figures are said to be comparable to a conventionally-powered Boxster S, which sprints from 0-62mph in 5.3 seconds.
As well as allowing Porsche to further its electric vehicle knowledge, the German firm has built the three cars to be included in part of a wide-reaching experiment taking place in Germany to establish the country as a leader in providing and supporting electric vehicles.
Over £110 million has been invested by the Federal Ministry of Transport, Building and Urban Affairs in setting up 8 e-mobility electric vehicle regional trials across the country, aimed at establishing how electric cars are used and what infrastructure is required to run them
