Boxster rear speaker upgrade

Hi all,

I've just ordered the Boxtser rear-speaker kit from PNP (Harvey) in the USA. I've installed one of these before and the sound difference is tremendous. I (like many others) shelled out for the Porsche Sound Pack, only to be sorely disappointed in the sound.

Does anyone know why porsche won't sell the rear speaker kit in the UK?

I also think the sound pack's poor. Not much better than the standard radio/cd arrangement in my early Boxster 2.5, and that was dire.

What's the cost of the rear speaker upgrade and what's the website address of the supplier?

I'm getting mine from a bloke called Harvey, he builds his own and uses far superior parts to the Porsche ones. His email address is 944nut@comcast.com. He also auctions on ebay. Including postage it was $280 + any customs duty when it arrives here (£30?)...so under £200 in total. Expensive, but makes some difference to the sound.

We did an install of these previously, if you go onto boxa.net and do a search there are pictures and details of the install. A few guys from there have bought these, and all are happy.

As a new member waiting for delivery (May) I am limited to reading forum chat and asking questions.
My spec is 2.7, midnight blue, blue hood and partial grey seats. A/c, OBC, cruise control and wind deflector.
Decided against any OPC audio upgrade but wonder whether the Harvey rear speaker kit will work on a 2004 model. I can't see why the MOST optical fibre system should prevent non Porsche add-ons. If the speaker outputs use optics wont an optical to analogue converter solve the problem?

Hi Peter,
It was my car that Greig and I installed the rear speaker kit into.

The speakers are wired right up to the amp in the front boot, with the use of a supplementary cable which is provided with the kit.
I am not aware of any differences in the current MY04 sound equipment, so you should be fine to go ahead with this.
Regards

Peter,

The MY03 and MY04 are indentical cars..we did this install to an '03 with the "Porsche Sound Pack" (PSP) option. If you didn't specify PSP or Bose then you don't get the amp in the front boot, and you don't get the door speakers...just 2 rather poor dash speakers.

The head unit is the same regardless of which system you spec - the CDR-23. This uses the MOST bus, however the speakers are wired using standard speaker cabling regardless.

If you buy harvey's kit it will simply plug into the back of the CDR-23 unit if you have the base stereo. I will still significantly improve the sound. I you have the PSP option you plug it into the amp. Harvey provides fitting instructions and connectors for either option.

For a stand-alone system the MOST bus is almost irrelevant, as it is present, but only 1 item (the CDR-23) is attached. Otherwise it serves as the communication method between head unit/amp and cd-changer (if fitted)..but not the speakers.

Hi Greig and Topbear,
Thanks for your response. I guess this will be my first upgrade when my B arrives in May.
I am suprised that Porsche should supply such a poor audio system. Its one thing to keep the spec low and charge for good quality extras but to deliberately supply low quality seems to be "not very porsche like " !!

Greig,
One other question. Is the "rear shelf luggage compartment" standard? I have ordered a wind deflector which I understand can be stored in a compartment behind the seats. Is this the same thing? I assume I will need something to receive the rear speaker upgrade.

If you ordered the wind deflector then you will get the rear shelf storage compartment. The rear speakers mount in this.

Edit. I would have gone for the Porsche Sound Pack - otherwise all you will have are the below-screen speakers. The Sound pack provides the door base bins with speakers. The sounds not bad.
