Boxster reliability?

Two weeks ago on a trip to Scotland my 2005 2.7 Boxster lost all power and died on the M6. Fortunately this was only 30 min from home and the car was quickly recovered to Porsche Centre Kendal. My trip was completed in a Merc C Class. The breakdown happened on Friday and I got the Boxtser back on Tuesday. Apparently on Friday afternoon they got the car going after replacing a fuse but then had to investigate why it had blown. Eventually they discovered that a wire was misrouted and had shorted against the chassis, and that this must have occurred when the tracker was fitted. An isolated fault?! Strange thing is it occurred at exactly 25000 miles!

Yesterday I went to move the Porsche out of the garage. It would not start! Firstly the starter turned over but did not engage. Eventually it did turn over but then was clearly flooded. After leaving it for a while I finally got it to start. No warning lights are now present although during the starting attempts the engine management light and the message take it an OPC appeared! I will take it tomorrow to have it checked but it is all a little worrying! I hope the CAT survived, but then it is still just under warranty.

This is the second fault in two weeks and the first time I have ever broken down in at least 15 years!

Anyone else had similar experiences?

No

Very helpful post, the guy has got a problem and all you have to say is an arrogant, No. If I was Stewart that would come across as very arrogant.

Stewart, sorry to hear that you had a problem, I have known of Trackers causing this type of problem before, on Porsche and Lotus Cars. I have had both. Depends on the tracker fitter and not all of them are 1st class. I know a chap that had problems for ages with a tracker fitment and the car not starting, Tracker washed their hands of it until and electrical engineer from the car manufacturer came along and showed them that the wiring was back to front! Tthey paid up after that!

Good luck!!

must have occurred when the tracker was fitted
Allways blame someone else if at all possible. I'm surprised you were not billed for the repair if problem was truly caused by third party tracker installation, which would have been the case on a 2005 pre VTS car.

@Heathcliffe - he asked a Question .. has anyone else had a similar experiances - I answered it truthfully..

I personally beleive (like many car forums) feel these are tilted too far to the "problem side" of ownership.. Any one reading them would believe every Porsche is a Lemon as thats the major theme thats posted .. If every One posted that they dont have problems we would (I think) have a very very High percentahe of happy owners .. and very very long threads ...

I am onto my 5th Boxster. All bought from new .. All sold under 3 years old (thats just the way I do cars) .... None have had a similar Electrical Fault, None have had a starting problem as described..

Now In the general way of forums I'll now post a view which is as similar as I can which will off course take the thread off track .... I had one car that did not start due to a flat battery once... But that was my fault as I left the GPS and Talex plugged and did not drive it for 4 weeks [:D]

@ Stewart - hope you get it sorted soon.. Please do post back the resultant solution when you get it fixed

Point by Point [;)]

1) I agree you did
2) Bang on again [:D]
3) Snap ... this is beginning to sound like we are related :ROFLMAO:
4) Only thing we have going here is the "Talex"[:)]
5) Obviously a concern to Stewart and I hope he is back in the reliable Boxster section real soon too []

PS: You aren't a Scorpion by any chance? [&o] Sorry just spotted the answer but the connection is 4 days seperate us in October [8D]

Thanks for your comments. I have actually been very happy with my Porsche and have sung it's praises until these two episodes. I use my car every day hence the 25000 miles and have enjoyed the driving experience very much. I am very disappointed and surprised that I have had these two issues. The wiring problem with the tracker was dealt with under warranty and there was no question of payment. Porsche assistance were also first class, but I still hope I do not have to use them again!

The starting issue was very unusual. I guess the flooding occurred because the starter did not engage but fuel was still delivered to a static engine. The problem I suspect lies with the starter but I am a little concerned that some damage may have been done to the emission control equipment although today it is running fine with no warning lights present!

I will get it checked and post any findings. My main concern is that the warranty expires when the car reaches two next month! Do I extend it?!! Do I feel lucky?!! Up until now I know I was probably not going to do it, especially as a change in circumstances means that I will probably need a larger car next year and the Boxster will have to go! That will of course raise the issue of trade in value and in particular my mileage! Porsche ownership is great but not cheap!!
