Boxster Road Trip!

Guest

New member
I'm picking up the new Boxster in April and am about to start planning a 2 weeks trip to Italy and back from the UK in July for me and the girlfriend.

Would anyone have travelled this way before and have any suggestions on routes or must have places to stop en-route?

Lots of twisties, top-down motoring is the idea. Were planning to stay in northern Italy for about 4 nights.

Any suggestions would be pretty helpful as I've never been that way before in a car!

There are a few threads on similar subjects in the forum, if you do a couple of searches on "Alps" or "Italy", with my name as the poster (I usualy contribute to these threads) you should pick up most.
If you'd like to give me a call (tomorrow evening - the number is in Porsche Post under Boxster Register Secretary) I could run through a few fun things we've done, places to stay etc. It depends what you want.

Have you thought of picking the car up in Stuttgart?

Factory collection seems like a really good fun deal.

It's at the dealer!!! I really wanted to do that but I bought a cancelled order! I have to wait until the end of the tax year as my old car is an asset in the business and I would get taxed heavily if I exchanged cars before April 5th!!!

Just been having a look at the threads - I'll make a list and check with the girlfriend then maybe give you a buzz if that's ok.

There are so many choices... Switzerland, Autobahn... Parking!!!!!

No problem!

I'll be at the London Region meeting tonight, but I'm usually in after about 7:30 in the evening.

Were going to Lake Como in Italy during August with a group of motoring enthusiasts, France-Vosge Mountains onto and through Switzerland (spending a week enjoying the passes) and then through some major twisties to Northern Italy and Lake Como, coming back via the Stevilo Pass and then to Switzerland again. Bit of champagne on the return and home via the Porsche Festival [:)] on the Monday
We went last year on a similar run and came back via Germany and the ring..
Eurotunnel still have the great deals of £98 and £198 (time sensitive) for the crossing without parking dents[]

Going to look up those places tonight!

What do you mean Eurotunnel deals - are there crossings that ddent?

A good place to start is Lake Constance. Lindau is my favourite stopping place, about 575 miles from Calais along a wonderful variety of roads, including the mandatory German autobahns. [;)]

Then head south east across the corner of Austria into the Italian Dolomites towards Cortina d'Ampezzo. Passes not to miss include the Stelvio (unbeatable anywhere), Gavia, Timmelsjoch and then north and west to Umbrail, Ofenpass, Fluelapass to Davos and Liechtenstein back to Lindau. Restrict your day to no more than 300 kms as mountain roads are relatively slow and demanding, and you really should get out and look at the wonderful scenery from time to time.

We prefer to travel in pairs as there is nothing quite like a chase car to put you on your metal, whether in the lead or following behind.

After many car tours in the mountains I can tell you there is nothing to beat it! This year we will be in northern Spain with the Club trip in May, the Dolomites in August and Iceland's interior (4x4 this time) in September. Be warned - once smitten there is no escape!

We are off to Umbria in July to the same villa we had last year.

It depends where abouts in Italy you are goping to as to which is the best route down.

We are going Eurotunnel France / Switzerland then Milan Florence. We alsways add on two extra days for a leasurely [] trip stopping just inside France and at Milan.

Dont forget that if you go through Switserland there is a motorway tax ( £23.50 if you by on line in the UK) but the tunnels are free.

Last year on the way back we took the scenic route through the mountains to Interlaken. Wonderful trip but you need to watch out for bikers they use it as race track on Sundays.

In Switzerland we found on sundays anyone who owns a motor vehicle is out in it or on it.

good link for the area twisties in Europe

Eurotunnel, if you go after either 5pm or midday and come back before a certain time then you can get the good deals Eurotunnel deals

either way its an exciting place to go..

Thanks for your help everybody! Never even thought about a mile per day count! I'm trying to avoid the adding in shopping days for the GF but I suspect she'll get her way which isnt too bad!

Only one thing I'm a bit worried about is that the 987 only has a can of gloop for a flat - wonder if I should bring a spare?

Also - got SatNav in the Mini but didnt order it with the Boxster. A map and a plan should be good enough?
