Boxster roof on the move

Can anybody remember an article in 911 & Porsche World about the lowering of the Boxster roof whilst on the move for cars up to 2002-3.
If I rember their is a unit that you can unplug and bend over two lugs allowing you to lower the roof without the handbreak on and on the move,

Thanks for the info, but this is not what I had seen. The article was using a the existing unit that is in the car.

This unit basically replaces an identical unit; it is a simple swap and I would recommend this rather than bending lugs (I guess you have to bend two in the picture below) as you can then sell the car as it was and sell this unit seperately or if you don't like the new functionality then you can always revert back...

Take a look here: http://www.renntech.org/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=365&view=findpost&p=1386

Basically, you bend pin 18 of the relay out of the way to disable the speed signal, and ground pin 15 to simulate the handbrake being on.

The SmartTop is a much safer alternative.

Some of the safety features of SmartTop which you will not get with the above permanent mod:
- SmartTop will only operate at speeds below 25mph, so someone can't accidental start closing at very high speeds which would probably seriously damage the roof mechanisim.
- The open and close switch combination opens up the roof completely without having to hold down the button; same with closing. Most people with the pre-facelift don't use the open feature but if you are quick you can start it and run for the boxster chop.
- Pushing either button while the top is moving stops operation at once.

Also, the SmartTop is literally a 5 minute job to fit, it isn't hugely expensive, and you can always take it out when you sell the car.

I'm suprised by the pic above - I don't have anything on my SmartTop module that says the hood must be down before installation. Why's that required I wonder. Mine works fine and I've always installed it with a closed roof.

Think this is for lastest version of the module (photo is a direct link to their current product list); I got mine some 2 years ago and it too did not have the install it with the hood down instruction. I have always swapped it when the roof is closed and have had no problems what so ever (I remove it every year when it goes in for OPC service)...

Same for me! I have always removed it when taking it to the OPC during service and never put the hood down while re-installing it but it still works for me.

I think it has been a good investment and I do just what Kish ( TXH911) does when taking the hood down.

I don't have to; mine is a facelift... Great purchase but have to say I only use it at very low speeds 10-15mph max and always on level surface; I have had warranty work done on the roof since I installed it and don't know if the mod was the cause or the problem was there before. The body bit which covered the hood wasn't quite resting flat on one side when the hood was fully opened and they replaced something to sort it out. Since then I have been very careful on when and how I use the feature... but it is fantastic when coming to park or opening and closing at the traffic lights without the fear of holding people up...
