Boxster running hot

Hi everyone. My Boxster is a 2000 model yr 3.2S. My wife is using it quite a bit at the moment and today after just 10 miles or so, she noticed that the temperature needle beginning to climb. She had been stuck in traffic but only for a few minutes. She immediately turned back for home with temperature gauge hovering just under the 100C mark and as she built up a little speed (60mph max), the temp cooled of a little.
Back home,I let it tickover on the driveway and the temperature fell closer to its usual position of just over the 80C mark.
Once it had cooled down, I checked the coolant: a little pressure released as I removed the cap which I reckon means there are no leaks (and no signs of leaks anywhere anyway) and the coolant was at the correct level.

I ran the car again, engine covers off and again no sign of any leaks. So I drove it around our village for 10 minutes and gave it a blast along the bypass with no issues and once back home, let it tickover on the driveway again. The temperature once again crept up to around 100C. However, I did not hear the fans cut in. In fact I even checked the fuses but all was ok.
Anyone got any ideas? The needle usually climbs to just over 80C and stays there and has alway done so, other than when stuck in traffic on a seriously hot day.

How recently have you removed the front PU to check for leaves, dead birds, etc caked on the rads, or between the condensers and rads? Are you certain both fans are running (not just the engine compartment fan)?

I've never removed the front PU though looking inside, it looks reasonably OK though I'll investigate further.

I don't think any fans are running: any idea what temperature before they cut in?

Sorry - no - but they make a fair old noise when they're on, so you know if they're running or not! The engine fan seems to have a mind of its own.

I think it's just above where the water hose connects near cylinder 4. There is also a valve which controls the flow of water to the front rads. So when the engine is hot you could check that the hoses, flow and return, to the front rads are getting hot.
If it were me. I would get the car checked at your local PC or Indie, overheating these engines is not a good idea!

First question I would ask is ... How good is the coolant in the system ? I have a 2000 2.7 and have mine changed every two years. It doesn't cost much. I think you "could be " running with fluid from the turn of the century.

Hope it helps ?

Regards

Paul

I would certainly pop into a garage with a Porsche tester (PIWIS), most of the symptoms can be easily diagnosed using this.

Still haven't had the time to investigate much further. However can anyone confirm that the fans should come on if the air con button is pressed.
At the moment, I have no fans at all even with the air con on.

Absolutely yes, the fans should run all the time with a/c on.

IIRC if outside ambient is too cold (cant remeber the temp - but it used to be in the manual) AC does not come on when the button is pushed, even though the AC light illuminates

Just had a look in the owner's handbook. Air con won't come on if its 0C or below. Which is good as it means the fans should be coming on now (its 10C). Which leads me to think its a sensor rather than fan relays. Can this be tested or is it worth just replacing?

Hmmm... Would the heat exchanger fans come on if the ambient temperature is lower than the set climate control temperature?
If so, then why?
