Boxster S 2002 Manual Front Rad Fans

Hi,

I'm having trouble with the 2 front rad fans on my Boxster S that I'm restoring. Neither fan works and I'm led to believe that they should both come on low speed when I turn the aircon on? When I run the car up to temperature so just a tad over 80 degrees the fans still don't come on. I've checked the four 40 amp relays in the fuse box and they are working, the two 40 amp blade fuses are OK too. I have just re-antifreezed the car but am confident there isn't an air lock as the heater blows hot, plus the front hoses to the rads are hot too. Could it be the fan temp sensor switch on the engine? If so can I bypass that with a bit of wire? Both fans spins freely by hand so are not seized. Could it be the ballast resistor wired into the fan, if so how do I check it?

As I've never driven the car on the road I have no idea if the fans have been working or not, but I've been following Wayne Dempseys book 101 Projects for your Boxster and he says the fans should cycle on and off.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Neil

I would start by applying 12volts to each fan motor and check they work then if they do short out the fan sensor switch and again check as you suggest in your post. Then you will have checked both fans and the sensor.

Thanks Robin. Is there a way to check the ballast resistor that's connected to the fans? There are £70.00 each so an expensive guess!

Cheers

Lawrence, that's really helpful. FWIW, if you're able to upload the PDF to a Dropbox folder it can be shared with others without the need to email it.
