Likely to be a sticky tappet ..... a long drive will make it go away. On older cars some also use a slightly thicker engine oil if it comes back.

My 2005 3.2s also has a slight ticking you can hear when idling outside , sailed through the Porsche check when I bought it though.

As Nick said it can be quite normal to have slightly noisy tappets, if it improves as the engine gets warm then its probably nothing to worry about, but if you're not sure its always best to get it checked out.

If its a very light ticking sound at idle it will be the injection system injectors Normal
If slightly louder it might be a sticky tappet.

Thanks for all your help.I will keep an eye on it and if the sound gets louder i will pop the car down to northways.

If it is a clicking from both sides rather than a metallic tapping it is injectors, quite normal, "they all do that" as the techies say. Just to qualify what I meant.[;)]

Good job you don't have a 987 Gen 2 with the DFI engine! The injectors are even louder owing to the higher fuel pressures involved.

One of the problems with the "boxer" engine is that there's a large noise-radiating surface parallel to the ground and sound just gets reflected off the ground surface and out the sides of the car without any attenuation, unlike the somewhat enclosed environment of an in-line engine.
